Beks, as I have commented to you before - I still hold a deep and unhealable grudge against Ralph Nader for taking out his psychotic frenzy on my first car - the Chevrolet Corvair. I bought mine (1967) AFTER writing my senior term paper in high school on his book "Unsafe at Any Speed", which was a total crock.

Did or did not the Corvair's rear mounted engine cause an excessively high incidence rate of loss of control and wrecks?

Nader is a socialist/communist in the name of consumer activist.

Most modern socie/commies work towards their goals using oblique causes as their vehicle. Look at the environmental movement as an example.

    Regarding the Corvair from WikiPedia:

The American motoring journalist David E. Davis, in an article in Automobile Magazine, drew attention to the fact that although Nader claimed that the use of a swing-axle rear suspension was dangerous, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen all used similar swing-axle concepts during that era. [ 6 ] The handling of the 1950's Mercedes 300SL Gullwing has also been noted to be tricky by modern commentators. [ 7 ]

According to an account attributed to U.S. author Bob Helt, [ 8 ] the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ran a series of comparative tests, in 1971, studying the handling of the 1963 Corvair against four contemporary cars, a Ford Falcon, Plymouth Valiant, Volkswagen Beetle, Renault Dauphine and also a later 1967 Corvair (with a revised suspension design) was included for comparison. The account went on to describe some of the test details, which included a review of national accident data, and a review of GM internal files and documents, and quoted parts of the original NHTSA report. [ 9 ] The result of this test, according to Helt, was, "The 1960-63 Corvair compares favorably with contemporary vehicles used in the tests...the handling and stability performance of the 1960-63 Corvair does not result in an abnormal potential for loss of control or rollover, and it is at least as good as the performance of some contemporary vehicles both foreign and domestic."

Many high performance cars are mid-engined. This is because it improves traction and handling, not reduces it.

    Did not. See BTS above.

Do you know the difference between a front engine and a rear engine car when they overcook a curve? The front engine car goes through the fence radiator first, the rear engine car goes through the same hole in the fence backwards.

I am now going to drive home in my rear-engined 993 Porsche. Ralph Nader will not be driving home in anything, because he is afraid to drive.

Afraid to laugh, afraid to cry, afraid to live, afraid to die. Just afraid.

Was not the issue in with Corvairs the fuel tank and its position?

I have no doubt that the fear of legitimate litigation has made many companies to behave in a far more responsible fashion. Has there been "vexatious and frivolous litigation" ? Yes - no doubt, do not use this as an argument to neuter tortious actions, but (as has been said), reform the sometimes, outlandish awards.

Btw Porsches' are known to have a problem with their rear end swinging out , if driven poorly, Porsche drivers know this.

    Regards David
