    Oldflame:

"Global warming is a lie it was created to create fear in people so that the elite can make a mint off of it! Al Gore is one of them who stands to make billions ! The earth has changed it's climate every so many years this is nothing new and we are not cooking to death either."

Why Global Warming and not something more visceral and personal like AIDS?

Also, so what if the Earth has changed its climate. Since when is man made disaster justifiable because something similar has been happening naturally?

"The earths temp. has changed something like 1.2 degress big whoopie oh hell lets sell our homes and quit college because tomorrow the earth is going to fry. people need to see reality and facts more often...."

Your thinking concerning temperature rise is very simplistic and one dimensional. A simple analogy should explain how nature is different than most peoples assumptions. For instance, your average body temperature should be somewhere around 98.6 degrees give or take a small amount. Guess what happens when it increases 5 degrees? Your brain is toast. Optimum temperature for the brain 98.6 but approaching lethality is just a small step away? It is the same with other natural systems. It is, figuratively speaking, a tightrope that we walk.

The Al Gore argument is always a steady dependable friend to the deniers - albeit a tu quoque ad hominem.

Because he has a private jet and a big house and a lot of money and green investments, climate change is not happening.

A more logical, but equally invalid, argument would be that Al Gore is a hypocrite, but at least is an argument that is worth addressing.

To argue based on Al Gore's personal lifestyle or choices that climate change is not happening is just lame lame lame.

I see your point about Al Gore, besty. But, it has now, more than ever, become a matter of trust. People have been screwed so much by governments, politicians, and special interest groups that we just can't seem to trust the information we are fed anymore. People are becoming hardened by the lack of honesty in all avenues of life from the government to the media... and for good reason, imo.

It's understandable that people think it's all a scam to sell another book, to receive another grant, to fund another study, to redistribute our wealth, to stick it to whoever for whatever reason. Public trust is gone...kaput!

Factual but irrelevant. Critical thinking should be the basis of any decision. Most people though have neither the curiosity nor the ability to make a decision on any subject of importance and this irrespective of intelligence.

villabolo...The fact that public trust is gone may be irrelevent to you, but it's an observation that colors the way people view things and how they interpret published information. Review your definition of critical thinking. Perhaps that is exactly what some (not all) objectors to the climate change solution are using.

    Journey,

I hear ya about the trust issue it is a very valid point. One problem is the data is so complicated that you have to be a scientist specializing on climate change to make real use of it, and even that being the case there seems to be a variety of interpretations and much needs to be debated still.

I do feel that the basic conjecture is true humans and overpopulation are a considerable cause but just what to expect is another story. No doubt we will all be on the same page when we see more tangible evidence that is undeniable but by then it may mean many more casualties, unless we come up with some sort of miracle solution.

    Fallacy: Ad Hominem Tu Quoque

Also Known as: "You Too Fallacy"

Description of Ad Hominem Tu Quoque

This fallacy is committed when it is concluded that a person 's claim is false because 1) it is inconsistent with something else a person has said or 2) what a person says is inconsistent with her actions. This type of "argument" has the following form:

      1. Person A makes claim X.
      2. Person B asserts that A's actions or past claims are inconsistent with the truth of claim X.
      3. Therefore X is false.

The fact that a person makes inconsistent claims does not make any particular claim he makes false (although of any pair of inconsistent claims only one can be true - but both can be false). Also, the fact that a person's claims are not consistent with his actions might indicate that the person is a hypocrite but this does not prove his claims are false.

    What global warming??

    Ri: "What global warming??"

Let's see. In the last decade 40,000 Europeans died from a record breaking heat wave. Several ice shelves, one the size of Rhode Island, broke off Antarctica. The Arctic Ice Cap is both shrinking and thinning. 97% of Glaciers are in full retreat. Permafrost has been melting throughout Siberia for years.

But no, deniers don't see that. They see a cold year like this one and think that it represents the pattern. Until another hot year comes and they're back to their other excuses.

    Villa,

In all fairness I think we must admit this subject is a complicated one, that requires an in depth study to be informed. Trust in public officials, and scientist seeking grant money,, fudging the data before review boards,, is a very real and perhaps likely to happen. It is an up hill battle because not everybody can find the time to be well informed.

It does seem to me that the conditions have to get worse and worse before something is done and by then I think we will be seeing a drastic reduction in the human population which needs to be brought back to a more controlled growth(unemotionally, and realistically speaking). Evolution has a way of doing this and many times it uses ways we don't like but works just the same.
