So far, there are Yiz, Asilentone, and me. Who else is D/deaf here?
Had to make my own thread as I was in serious danger of hi-jacking Asilentone's thread about potato salad

I will check this thread later. I am going to bed. Good Night!
Night!
I am not deaf, but I am playing one in real life. I mean my hearing has been bad since grade school, but I notice lately that I am actually reading lips. I work with the public, and in a very very diverse area. You know how hard it is to read lips in chinese???
Night Asilent!
Try English! It's hard! Without my CI's, I can only speech read one word at a time, and I have to confirm each one of them. I got my CI's 9/12/01 while the nation was mourning. Bad timing.
Are you Chinese? Do you know the language? How the heck does one account for all those tones they have? I'd just have to use CSL (Chinese Sign Language).
Asilentone is deaf? Interesting, because when he was asking what car to buy, he was saying he liked the Honda (I think) because it was so quiet?

There are a few nearly universal hand gestures that come in handy for customer service.
I like variety on this forum, it is so good to have different people from all walks of life coming together.
No, I am not Chinese. And I suppose I should have said a Chinese accent. What is "CI's"?
When I was in 6th grade they told my mom I needed my adenoids removed because I failed the hearing test. She was against any kind of surgery, and since then (a long long time) I have generally abused my hearing. I can hear, I just need things louder than Honey Bunny would like them to be and I have a really hard time with certain people's.............tone? I have noticed at work, that it really helps to be looking at the persons lips. Not exactly lip reading, but definitely helps.
How did you go deaf? Was it gradual? An injury?
