Is the Jehovah’s Witnesses organization really a cult?

I have a very good book on recovery from cults and abusive relationships.

The authors did not consider Jehovah's Witnesses to be a cult, but formed that opinion on the size of the group and logic that they applied out of ignorance of the structure of the organisation.

The criteria that they used to describe high control groups fitted the Watchtower to a tee.

In order to demostrate that the WT is not a cult, you have two options:

Use a definition of the term that does not apply to the Watchtower.

Use a definition that does describe them, but using dishonesty and mental gymnastics, hope that ignorance of the workings of the church enable you to deceive your victim into a false sense of security.

The WBATS is absolutely a cult as is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The LDS has best been described as the Scientology of it's day and it really is.

    LDS and WBATS are brothers

Jan Groenveld has written a good piece called "Identifying a Cult" on www.culthelp.info. (she is an ex JW)

    Another good on is www.howcultswork.com

Whether you choose to draw your definition of a cult so tight that it excludes the JW's is up to you, I more often than not ,when referring to them, call them a Mind-Control Cult.

Their methods are identical to those used by groups that are undoubtedly cults.

The Cult of the Governing Body would be another way to refer to them.

It is good to throw that at them if you have the chance, the word "Cult", they have to examine the evidence to try to prove they are not a cult.

"Do they still encourage people to refuse modern, lifesaving medical treatment? Yes?

OK, then they're murderers. Non-cult murderers."

That is a damned good point, buddy. Not too many non-cults have teachings that have been directly responsible for adherents' deaths.

You know, I don't even think it's the doctrine so much that qualifies it as a cult - it's the methodology/policies/enforcement. The whole blood prohibition wouldn't be so offensive if they were rational and human about it. I have no problem being told to abstain from blood - even that bloodless surgery is preferable. However, when somebody tells me - or, for fuck's sake, my KIDS - that it's literally preferable to DIE rather than accept a blood transfusion, and use the threat of shunning to compel me/them to comply, yeah, then we got a problem.

Wacky beliefs don't in and of itself make you a cult. Intellectual dishonesty, manipulation, coercion, etc. carried out to inhuman lengths to ensure said wacky beliefs are followed at all times without exception - now that, I think, qualifies.

Believe whatever the hell you want. Just be a human being first and a believer second.

However, if weirdness alone is the determining characteristic of a cult, the Catholic Church could be considered a cult

Steve Hassan, cult exit counselor and mind control expert said the Catholics were once a cult. They could become one again if the right nut job gets into the right position of power.

And to answer your question, Yes, the JWs are a cult. If anyone tells you that they, and they alone, have 'the Truth' then you're dealing with a cult. As a JW, you are not to have much, if anything, to do with what is deemed non-JW (aka 'worldly') by the Watchtower which designates them as isolationist.

Once baptized, you are not allowed to question the Governing Body or anyone in a position of authority. You are 'shepherded' if you do and if you continue, you are kicked out. Once kicked out, you are shunned. So they use fear of being cut off from everyone you know and love if you do not conform. They have legalistic views and rules on matters that they should not. My sex life with my partner is none of their business, as are my choices for medical treatment, especially if it is something that can save my life. They oppress a whole segment of their membership based on gender.

I really think agonus states it succinctly and accurately here:

Wacky beliefs don't in and of itself make you a cult. Intellectual dishonesty, manipulation, coercion, etc. carried out to inhuman lengths to ensure said wacky beliefs are followed at all times without exception - now that, I think, qualifies.

That makes a Jesus a cult leader then Heaven, n'est ce pas?

When I underwent baptism in 1971 - the mindset was very much against a label - we were urged pointedly to say that we were "one of Jehovah's Witnesses" and not "I'm a Jehovah's Witness" - in an attempt to throw of religious "labels". I was proud to be part of a forward thinking, student organisation of people - delving for the truth, refining, sifting and advancing.

What I see today is almost a secularised religion that has been turned to "cult-like" ways at the hand of some of its members.

But, for the "old school" and at the heart, I believe there is despair at what has happened. That is why I left. I blame it on the Marketing guys who turned the Watchtower Society's efforts into mega sales of not just literature but cassettes, dvd's videos and other products because that is the chosen route of MAKING MONEY. There is no middle man to pay - that is what the "Publishers" are.. a 7million strong distribution force.

How do I know that? Because that is the answer I gave when I was approached by the Branch Committee before being given a job in the Office at Bethel. It haunts me to this day - that I gave the right answer.

The Witnesses of Jehovah are NOT a cult.. unless that is You classify the following of a man, Jesus (the Christ) as being a Cult-like trait.

Several years ago a poster did a great thread giving examples of the WTS's using Hassan's BITE model and WT references:
