I honestly don't know if they were "dead all along"... they didn't really say... I don't think so, because Claire's baby got to be born, and Sun's didn't.
And what was up with Ben not going into the church? Is he in hell? Purgatory?

Claire never made it off the island........with Aaron originally.
It was only through the shifts that Kate removed him......
Aaron apparently died a baby.
Remember John said that Jack didn't have a son......
The Kwon's didn't have their daughter either.....
So the only real 'survivors' were on the final flight........
