Difficult to understand ending and not that thrilling as mentioned.Many ananswered questions,chatacters have talked nonsense many times during episodes.Personally I think the ending is the weak point.

Aren't writers always making it up as they go along?
The series "concept" came from J.J. Abrams. He gave them the premise which included the end.
Lindlehoff and Cuse organically fleshed out the in between while constantly monitering Discussion Boards and Podcasts to avoid being trapped in a "discovered" inconsistency and heading off speculations.
All I can say is that the acting and stories were top drawer and my lasting memory is positive.
Your mileage varies by your built-in expectations.
