"Lost" does not describe their geographical status.
It does describe their emotional/mental/spiritual status, the status of their soul.
That's the great twist, the "joke" if you will.

Well summed up Terry - that's exactly how I see it.
Spawn, free speech is one thing - pretending you're better than the rest of us because we enjoy a TV SHOW that you don't makes you petty and small minded. Please stop mistaking free speech for disrespect.
The show was never "about" the island. Figuring out "what it all means" never was the point.
Right which is why I was very frustrated after watching the ending last night. I spent the last 6 years trying to figure out the island. I do think the island was some sort of mystic porthole to the great beyond and that when Des pulled the cork, he opened the "gates of hell". Smokey wanted to destroy everything not because he was pure evil but because he couldn't accept his fate. Yet, the cork getting pulled allowed Smokey to actually regain his human side. Richard as well. I thought it was interesting when Miles pulled out the gray hair that Richard was so excited that he could age and now actually wanted to live!!
hemplover - thanks for posting that blog. Very interesting take.
I would have been happier since I'm more a "man of science" as opposed to a "man of faith" with an explaination of exactly what the island was, why it was there, and what purpose Whitmore wanted it for. But, the character story of redemption leaves you with a good feeling and I guess I'm ok with that.
BTW - I thought the sideways reality being limbo was actually a great stroke. We saw the island at the bottom of the ocean at the beginning of this season which started the sideways reality. All the passenger's desires in this reality were met although not perfectly. This limbo allowed the characters go come to grips with what happened each in their own time.
Thank you for the link, hemp lover, and your explanations, Terry and DB. I'm slowly wraping my brain around it all...
I think I get the point, and like another poster, at one time felt the island was purgatory, but, like DB I was hoping for a more "tangible" explanation, so I was left dissapointed... What was I thinking???!!!
Well I enjoyed the final episode but not entirely - seemed unfinished in a number of ways. Also found it all a bit emotional as well.
I felt the death of the man in black, smoke monster, whatever you want to call it, was very sudden. We had been building up to some sort of massive crescendo regarding him and it all seemed to end in a whimper.
Seemed right that Ben did not go in the church as he was not deserving - well not yet.
Richard Alpert (in arguably the best ever episode - Ab Aeterno - Season 6, episode 9) told them they were dead and he was right. I was hoping they would reunite Richard and his wife in the final episode - but alas it did not happen.
6 years I have watched this program - when it started I was an Elder, Auxilary pioneering etc etc. Little did I know I was Lost back in those days - but not anymore......

Oh my little spawn.... since when does agreement with fellow people mean that you are kissing ass? Don't worry love - just say it. It's ass, not arse.
Kiss me! Come to the monkey... KISS ME! You obviously have a lot of hate in your life.... KISS THE MONKEY! Come to me love... let us forget this for now...

I agree!!! But I guess if you buy into the message of the finale then you "know" one day Richard and his wife will be reunited.
Shamus: I love you!
I quit watching it when they introduced the smoke monster that violated the laws of physics. At that point I knew they were dead or stupid aliens were in charge.
Honestly, I think they BS'ed for six years using the net to decide based on everyone's responses what to do next.
That show never had any story to tell.
It was just Seinfeld on an island with a bunch of unfunny melodramatic people.
well put gebberningbody
the only thing that was Lost was the plot, the acting and the way absolute trash can last for so long on the TV. Simple telly for simple people!!!
