If SHE is more "traditional", a single solitaire is perfect. If she's not so much, she might like other stones. The vast majority of women love solitaires or diamond solitaires with other diamonds in the mounting.

You need to find out what she likes. Me, I'm partial to the emerald cut and prefer simple settings. Everyone is different.
It's become popular (marketing gurus) to purchase "a diamond of a carat or more", but quality trumps quantity in my book. Consider the 5 c's: cut, clarity, color, carat and cost when selecting a diamond.
Platinum is more expensive but much more desirable than white gold, which is nothing but a coating and tends to fade.
My husband did his homework 30 years ago and I still love my .50 emerald cut solitare.
Also... you may want to make sure it's a "conflict free" diamond (this matters to me, but not everyone).
Make sure to get down on one knee when you pop the question!
Good luck and congratulations!

That price range is about right...however....I know it's not about price.
You need to first think about her tastes. Does she go for simple jewelry or something with a bit of pop to it? Some people line simple, solitaire rings but other women like a bigger statement, something with a lot of sparkle and multiple stones. Others really prefer something sentimental - something hand crafted or inscribed.
The ring you pictured wouldn't be my cup of tea - it looks exactly like my previous engagement ring...but more importantly, it's about her taste. If you want to surprise her, just walk through a mall wearing an old watch and 'suddenly' say you need to get the battery changed out. You walk in and as you walk around you will probably get a really good feel for what she likes. sammieswife

Emerald cuts don't emit the same sparkle as "radiant" or "princess" cuts but they certainly have an intrinsic beauty if they are white "clean" diamonds.

That's right min. Emerald cuts are usualy cut from high quality diamonds for that reason.
A "cushion" setting is quite popular these days. Try to find out what your gf prefers.

The diamond that no one buys anymore is the marquise cut. In the 80's it was one of the biggest selling stones, second to rounds.

Thank goodness for that! I always thought they were tacky! :)

Oh, and antique or estate rings are popular too. But, again, it all depends on what your gf likes. You might want to ask one of her close friends if you thingk you can trust them not to spill the beans...

3 stone rings, past, present future rings have been pretty popular these last few years. Originally they were called the "Bostonian" ring because that style ring was most popular in the Boston area.

Minimus is right. It must be at least one carat. I'd prefer a bigger diamond solitaire in an 18K gold setting, so that you can afford the bigger diamond. 18K has a prettier color than 14K.
Personally, my engagement ring is a huge emerald surrounded by diamonds with a diamond band. I'd had the traditional wedding ring the first time and wanted something unique this time.
Perhaps you could find some ads in the Sunday paper for jewelry stores and ask her to look at it, with some excuse that you want to buy your mother a necklace for her birthday or something and then subtly segue to the wedding ring pages and see what she likes.
