changing doctrines is not on the same level as parting with money........

When people start parting with their cash in such a basis they begin to feel a sense of entitlement......
The Mormon tithing also enables reduced college tuition for their children!
Yes LDS members get a 50% discount to already lower college rates at BYU.
In creating a broader financial community the LDS has insulated it's wealth more diversly and are able to entice it's members with such discounted perks.

I wonder, if that applies to a convert who decides convert a year before his kid needs to enroll in college? The opinion seems to be that JW's wouldn't want to tithe or couldn't afford it. If they did away with FS- it's totally voluntary- no records, time slips, etc, and the associated expense for the brothers, the JW's would have more money to give to the KH.
"WE don't pass a plate"!
This was one of the first statements my daughter made during our first argument over the J.W. "religion" years ago.
I would love to throw that back in her face. (Discreetly, of course).

That's because they don't use plates. They use donation boxes which are much too large and heavy to be passed around by hand. They're part of the furniture. They are, however, numerous and strategically located.

good point, FF!
I have some Mormon in laws. One other big difference is that Mormons are very visibily part of the community around them, they give to outside causes, and when one of their own gets in trouble they pull together very admirably. If the WTBS wants to use that as a financial model, they are going to have to change a lot of things.
Riding around with Witness family today, we passed the largest Baptist church in town. Somebody remarked that one can't become a member of that church until they disclose their finances. Of course, they all thought that was an awful idea. I said that it is how that church gets its ten percent tithe. Yes, only big, bad Christendom gets involved with the finances of its members. If the WTS ever tried compulsory "donations", I would have a field day with that.
