Is it socially and professionally acceptable to drink a beer during your lunch break?

I've been watching my alcohol intake for dietary reasons. I've been limiting my consumption to a small half glass of Vodka, or a shot or two of Bourbon. Alcohol just doesn't do well with the gains I want to make working out. It contributes to sugar and fat, which I want to avoid for another month or so. As a result I've been fiending for a beer in the worst way. Where I work, there are plenty of places one can go to during lunch hours to get a drink. Every now and then I flirt with stopping somewhere and drinking a Heineken or two. Is this acceptable to do so during lunch hours in the work week? A little over a decade ago I was working at a plant, and our boss treated us to a lunch at a tavern. There was a half dozen or so of us. Everyone minus myself, got beers. I was underage for one thing, plus the JW background was kicking in. There was another dude who was underage too, matter fact the boss' son. He ordered a beer too! I felt like a lame for doing that back then, but after a good decade of being legal and drinking my fair share I've since forgotten about that.

Again, is it socially and even professionally acceptable to drink a beer or two during lunch hours?

It all depends upon your management.

While at Bethel, it was nothing to have Martinis after Bethel lunch and then return to office work.

I would think a lot depends on your profession.

Accountant or sales clerk or programmer, why not?

Brain surgeon or airline pilot, not so much.

Depends on your company policy...and your department policy.

Where I work, drinking at lunch for office staff is not prohibited...because we may have to entertain clients. But at the same time, truck drivers and warehouse staff are not allowed to drink at lunch.

For me, in my particular situation, it's not only socially and professionally acceptable, it's expected. But for me, it's not an excuse to have a beer for lunch everyday. If I feel like I do, if I don't, I don't. But if I'm with clients or on a business trip, then I follow the clients lead. If they order, I'll join. If they don't, I'll refrain.

edited to add: I wish I could have worked during the Mad Men days. A liquor bar in your office. Feel like having a drink, just step over to the bar, chunk a couple of ice cubes in a glass and pour your favorite poison... That'd be cool as hell...

As said it depends on the company you work for and your dining company. I've been to more than a few business lunches that were accompanied by a glass of wine or beer. In fact I'm pretty sure that is why I'm smiling in my avatar. :-)

I did beer tasting as job (very very briefly) - would drink four beers, fill in a survey, get paid. They seemed to be ok with it
