Is it socially and professionally acceptable to drink a beer during your lunch break?

I work in automotive. Lots of engineer's and IT dudes who love their beer. Sometimes we invent ideas for lunchtime fesitivities, such as the latest "cheeseburger tour" where we go to a different hole in the wall to test the burgers, of course you have to have beer with your burger. We have had at least 25 people at times in those places. There are a few who cannot help themselves and end up ordering shots and I think those people end up going home. On Cinco De Mayo my boss ordered a pitcher of margarita's. I did come back to the office that day and was giggling the whole time.

So yes, it is acceptable. We joke about that kind of stuff all of the time. But, not a good idea to smell like a wine-o when you get back. I am often taken out by companies for lunch, sometimes for holiday's, etc. and will have a glass of wine if the people I am with do.

I never did take lunch time drinks when at work. No rules or religion involved, I would just want to sleep all afternoon as I have never been much of a drinker. Plenty of my colleagues would have a couple of pints during lunch break and a few had a bottle of orange juice in their desk, usually with vodka added.

The other big problem here in the UK is drink/drive laws of course. My boss got breathalised on his way home and lost his licence for a year. Most inconvenient!

I say, who cares about the company policy. Just don't be an idiot and make it obvious that you had one or two beers. Keep one or two sticks of gum in your pocket so right before you walk in, shove them in your mouth. lol. Just get started on your work right away. Keep the chatter to a minimum, that way if your a bit tipsy no one will notice. But if you work with machinery or have a meeting with others and you have to speak, forget it. It really depends what you do for a living. Have a drink after work if you have to work closely with people/patients/clients/bosses. If your on your own just have one or two drinks. Depending on your tolerance. You don't want to be stumbling around or slurring. Just enough to take the edge off.

I used to be a law office manager and about once a month the entire office would leave for lunch (about 12 people total) for almost two hours. The big bosses would order about 10/11 bottles of wine and everyone would have beer or hard drinks too. Since I carried the company credit card I had to pay the bill and leave the tip, I didn't drink as much..bummer. But other days when I would meet up with my hubby or friend for lunch (during work hours) I would try to take a late lunch (around 1:00 p.m.) and definately had a drink or two. I figure if the bosses take us out and everyone gets pretty smashed, why can't I have a cocktail during my lunch just to take the edge off. I never got like them, even though I wanted to.

    Be safe.

Before the smoking ban here in the UK.. I would frequent pubs with colleagues and have a beer or two.

Only now, that we are smoke free in public places, do I realise how I must have smelt like a soused kipper when I was treating patients.

I can't tolerate the smell of tobacco now and find the piquant whiff of alcohol on the breath most off-putting.

However, I love a dram or two in the evening!!

First and foremost, read your employee handbook. 5 out of 6 companies I've worked for tied their alcohol policy directly to the legal limit for intoxication for their state (usually 0.08%). That roughly correlates to 2-3 drinks for men and 1-2 for women within the span of an hour. In other words, a drink or two is fine, but don't come back to work sloshed!
