Is it socially and professionally acceptable to drink a beer during your lunch break?

I work for government where the work rule is no alcohol if you are coming back to work.

D8. Using alcoholic beverages while on state time or property.

D9. Reporting for work in an unsafe condition or being unable to perform work due to the influence of alcoholic beverages or illicit controlled substances.

Yeah it probably depends on the kind of work. I've been in healthcare/patient care my entire adult life, it's a big no-no there. I've always wished I could have a job where I could keep a bottle of booze in my desk.

I worked for a media company. It was very plush, private offices with sofa & rug. Under the desk would be a mini fridge *** each *** always rammed with beers / wine. You could start the evening off with a few at your desk, wander down to the on site bar, and if you missed all of that, on a Friday they came round with a drinks trolley to start the weekend off definitely ok in that industry

I once worked for a family owned business and the owner had a wet bar in his office. He had a couple of bottles of liquor, some wine, some beer. But it stayed locked and he only used it after hours. He worked 12 hour days, but never drank in front of the staff duing the day. After they left though, he opened up the bar and would share with anyone who he made stay late to work on a project. An extra little perk that helped ease the pain of working overtime...and you got to see the owner let loose a little, see his human side.

I once worked with someone like UC that had a bar in his office and the sales people and salary people would meet there and unwind and rehash the day. After big sales or when getting off early Xmas eve all employees were invited to the office for "tea and crumpets." At one time we were cutting costs and I suggested cutting the liquor. That was one thing that was not going to be stopped. It was a great social place for us to talk about business.

When I was a furniture buyer, the reps would take me/us to lunch and yes we had drinks!!!
