It's different depending on company policy and community standards. There is no One Size Fits All.
Is it socially and professionally acceptable to drink a beer during your lunch break?

I'm in marketing and work in an office, so we'll get beer at lunch all the time. We can't let the boss know since he is mormon. But the BIG bosses in CA don't mind at all. I think I told everyone that they have beer tasting in their conference room every friday.
However I agree with whoever said "Brain surgeon, airline pilot, no."

No, it's against policy but we have lazy management. Around here, lots of people take liquid lunches on paydays, Mondays, humpdays, Fridays, humpday eve and TGIF eve.

As above, it is very situational. That includes what country or region you are in. When I took clients or sales staff to lunch in Salt Lake City it was strictly ice tea, coffee or soda. I ate a few plates of pot roast over the years with coffee, yecch. If I was working on a punch press in a factory (which I have done and have the tinnitus to prove it) it would be a no no to have a beer with lunch and rightly so.

Not in my line of work. Being in the event industry, it's often there and thus offered but policy is no booze til the shift is done.

I had lunch with the company president today and ordered a beer ... I always say "it's Ok, I'm British ... people expect it". If I was going to a new client site I wouldn't have one but some clients liked to go to the pub for meetings.
In the UK I worked for a company where there were often lots of American and Swedes visiting and they served beer in the canteen. Americans seemed shocked that it was even available, Brits sometimes had beer, sometimes didn't, you'd sometimes see Swedes with a tray loaded up with beer.
It's just culture that makes something acceptable or not.

I have had a beer once or twice in my working career during lunch, but not often. It is not advised where I currently worked, as in don't get caught with alcohol on your breath or come back from lunch sloshed. But it isn't recommended.

I just don't think it's a good idea (and I like my cocktails). Wouldn't you enjoy it more after work anyway? Jobs are so hard to come by right now I just wouln't chance it. NMKA

It`s not a Big Deal in Canada.. Just don`t get snockered and go back to work..
Apparently you haven't been keeping up with the news in BC, OUTLAW. People are scared s**tless of drinking in BC restaurants now. The new laws are a real buzz kill...
In short, drinking during lunch is not acceptable where I live. Happy hour is dead...

One drink at lunch in addition to the normal early afternoon sleepies made the perfect formula for an unproductive and miserable day. No thanks.
Now here is a strange confession. My work often presented me with a drafting table mounted with a blank sheet of 24"X36" paper. I stared at it, knowing I had to create a huge commercial kitchen for a hotel or restaurant with a looming deadline from the architect. On more than one occasion I simply put on my coat and went for a walk and a few tokes. Invariably, I came back from such a break, picked up my pencil and created a prelim sketch that two years or so later was an installation that was turning out meals efficiently and with complete satisfaction of the client. Many of my designs were recognized for their practicality and 'flow'. I did this on several occasions over the last 25 yrs. Many of these kitchens are still working smoothly and I often think of the day I took a quiet walk and found a way to unlock my mental logjam .
