Every publisher must pay for assembly costs???

It certainly does cost money to have these assemblies and conventions, even if the building is owned by the circuit or the society and already paid for.

Let's take for an example an assembly hall that was built 20 or 30 years ago and is paid for, and there is a 2-day assembly there 50 weeks out of the year. There is an electric bill, water bill, let's say the parking lot has to be resurfaced every 5 years, seats need recovering every 3 years, the carpeting replaced every 10 years, toilet seats replaced every 5 years. All those costs can be broken down and averaged out, and divided by 50 weeks. Then they can estimate how much $ it costs to operate and maintain the building for each assembly. it does make sense that each congregation or each circuit should pay for their "share" of the expenses. But many JWs can barely afford the gas to get there, let alone the motel rooms.

A more cost-effective idea would be not to have such large meetings. Cover the material on a congregation level, perhaps in special study articles or special Sunday talks. Each congregation has to support itself anyway; why add to that burden?

3 Euros?! That's cheap! Talk about 'cost effective'; good job on the part of the Organization! Kudos!!!

I'm sure there will be way more than that worth of contributions for that and any other assembly. Here in the States it works out that way all the time.

We JWs are well aware that gatherings, KHs, etc., bring costs that must be covered by us the members. Come now, what's the big deal here?

We're getting quite pathetic about the things we complaint about lately, aren't we?!

While we're on the subject, Clyde and I asked 30 years ago WHY we need assembly halls anyway? We used to be so proud of the fact that we were copying the example of early Christians by having our assemblies in school auditoriums (Acts 19:9). When they first proposed the first assembly hall in our area, they stated the reason was because school auditoriums were so expensive. Clyde worked in accounting at the time and he wrote the check to a local school for $1,000 to cover the use of their facility for the entire weekend! He asked how in the world could they run an assembly hall cheaper than that?

At least they took the vote to the congregations at the time. We voted against it, but it was built anyway. A few years later another bigger and more expensive assembly hall was built--this time the vote only went to the elders. The cost of maintaining has to be enormous--even with volunteer help.

Doubtfully, I think the reason this upset me when I found out about it is because it seems to me to be a deceptive practice. An arbitrary number not based on actual expenses is disingenuous. If they say that expenses associated with the assembly are 12,000 when they are actually 6,000 is that truthful?

I got in hot water for writing a letter to the Assembly overseer to stop guilt tripping the friends over money. And it was an accounting trick like Mad pointed out. Any surplus was sent to the Society and then got listed as a deficit to the Circuit errrrr

What they don't do is explain the actual costs involved ie Insurance, Utility bills, loan repayment. I think they use to be afraid that we would only send in enough to cover the costs. Now I think they hope the Witnesses will at least send in that much.

Two years of a bad Recession and every body is feeling the pinch.

I went to "Convert £ Sterling into any currency using Moneyextra's UK currency converter" and got $4.66 per publisher.

Still cheap!!! Costs will be covered, not to worry!

Hey 'cantleave', ease up on the rage; it's just not necessary, and it can hurt your health, actually.

I will not pay one kaputnick (1/100 of a penny) more than I am getting in value at those wastefests. If they want my $5, they had better make sure I am going to get my $5 worth of value (plus the day I am wasting) before I go.

And, with some of these wastefests about bashing the world, I am not getting $5 worth by going. "Jehovah is Your Refuge Refuse" is not my idea of a good way to spend $5. Do not get an education. Settle for a crap job. Pio-sneer. Turn off the computer and TV. Listen only to Kingdumb sxxx that sounds like dying cats and cult chants. If they want my $5, they had better do a hell of a lot better than that. I suggest that, if you don't want to waste your $5 (and the whole day), you simply blow the whole damn thing off--they can't dun you for money if you don't go.

For the record, the unit is actually the British Pound.

As for $4.66 per publisher, if they are not getting $4.66 worth of value, it is not cheap. If they were getting lots of value out of going, it wouldn't be much trouble getting plenty of money.
