Yes they are. They might BS you into thinking they don't, but honesty is not important when dealing with non members.

If you and your boy do the excercises in the book, he will have tools that you can remind him to use now, and later on in life.
The only downside is, if you ever want him to believe a load of crap, you will have your work cut out.

no, ofc not. there are jw's that have been to college - many went before they came in. not that many born-ins or raised-as go though. the point that he is making is that if your son is raised as a jw, higher education will not be a priority dictated for him by the congregation. at meetings, at assemblies, in the magazines, etc. they will constantly talk down about going to college. in some cases he will even hear directly that college is not for true christians. it's really sick.
i know in my case, for years and years i heard how bad college was, only weak people went to college, all the evils of university, etc. then in the mid 1990s they did a flipflop, saying they "never said that". bullshit - i was there, i heard it. i even turned down a scholarship to a prestigious school because the WTS didnt think that going to college was a good idea.

i personally know a young woman who is an elder's daughter. she attended the local state university to get her master's so she could become a teacher.
it does happen. sometimes witnesses have less-than-dogmatic parents that let them go. but far more do not go. the standard is and has always been (at least since i've been alive) that going to university is pointless because the "end is so very near" and true christians should be spending all their time in the field ministry, etc.

A very warm welcome to you, 'not a jw'.
You are on a very steep learning curve regarding the JW's and their beliefs and practices. I remember in 1952 asking the same questions as you do now, my wife also said the same as yours! I have managed to just live with the JW's since then; many can not succeed at that.
The JW's are NOT the people they make out to be, they live in 'cloud Cuckoo land'.
Keep reading the posts here with some discernment and you will learn a great deal from people who have been through your experience.
Best of luck with your journey.

That doesn't mean that what she did was encouraged.
What the members often do to make their church sound less culty is to give examples of behaviours of selected members as examples to give the impression that they are 'normal'.
What they don't tell you is that those people are usually not following the guildlines and/or advice from the cult leaders, and that their literature contains plenty of articles that they really hope you don't pull out from under your chair right now to show them.

maybe you need to check out this thread

its an old thread but it may help you to understand that jws feel in no way obliged to give a non jw a truthful answer if they feel its something they don't need to know.

9 Another example of something useful that can become a valueless thing is secular education. We want our children to be well-educated so that they can make their way in life. Even more important, a well-educated Christian is better able to read the Bible with understanding, reason on problems and come to sound conclusions, and teach Bible truths in a clear and persuasive way. Getting a good education takes time, but it is time well spent.
10 What, though, of higher education, received in a college or a university? This is widely viewed as vital to success. Yet, many who pursue such education end up with their minds filled with harmful propaganda. Such education wastes valuable youthful years that could best be used in Jehovah’s service. (Eccl. 12:1) Perhaps it is not surprising that in lands where many have received such an education, belief in God is at an all-time low. Rather than looking to the advanced educational systems of this world for security, a Christian trusts in Jehovah.—Prov. 3:5.

Note: Never read a Watchtower article to a JW if you want to make a point. Make them read it to you and then explain it. You say as little as possible. Just ask questions. Ask in a way that makes them want to be able to answer you.
