Just a minor point about something you, Shelby said, this may be nit-picking,you said that before Moses the "Name" was not known to the Hebrews, but as it is found forming part of proper names found in Genesis, this cannot be so.
I understand what you are saying, dear Wobble (the greatest of love and peace to you!); however, apparently the sound of God's name was included in a whole lot of words and even some names. Not because it was known that it was God's name in particular that they were uttering, but simply because the vocabulary of the Hebrews was somewhat limited. I mean, it's not like they were a really large group of people BEFORE migrating to Egypt; they became a large group over the 430 or so years they were in Egypt. So from the time of Abraham to Jacob (Israel), they had a relatively close familial vocabulary - "tribal" even. Even Moses considered himself limited in speech, even though he grew up in Pharaoh's house. They're vocabulary grew while in Egypt and most of them didn't even know they HAD a God, let alone His name.
My Lord did not say to me, however, nor did I hear it said, that those BEFORE Abraham didn't know the name of the Most Holy One of Israel. Those who were in the East from where he came. All I heard was that the "Hebrews/Israel", which I understood to mean starting with Abraham (and not because, as some believe, he was the first to be called a "hebrew," although that is the modern and English transliteration and not the actual word), did not know the name. My understanding is that Abraham wasn't told on purpose (because his faith was tested).
However, that they knew the sound... because those before them knew the name... and used it in daily words and even some names... makes sense to me. I don't know (I have not heard) where it stopped, but it would seem to me that it had to be before Abraham's father, Terah (makes sense to ME that he would have told Abram the name if he knew it. If I hear anything to explain this further, I will certainly share it here - ).
And this is all that I know of the matter as of now, dear Wobble. I hope this helps and again bid you peace!
