Omg, I miss those cheese danishes! I haven't found any that taste like that since then.
We got to go to an international in Mexico. The convention was in Puebla. But my favorite part: we rented a condo south of Cancun right on the beach. We snorkeled nearby and saw all kinds of fish. We swam in ceyotes. We stayed in Merida for a few days, where they close the streets every weekend for dancing, music, and food stands. We went to Chichen Itza, where we climbed the 2 ft wide staircase inside the main ruin and saw the jade jaguar, we also stayed until dark for the constellation show. The stars were amazing! You could see the Three Sisters, each star! And the Milky Way...wow! And we looked down into the sacraficial pit where they used to throw the human offerings to their god.
That's the best thing I experienced as a witness.

Oh yea! The cheese danishes! I loved those too! and back in the late 70's and 80's the anticipation and excitement of getting new books released at the conventions! I was an avid reader and eagerly awaited each new release.

They taught me to be a loving and thoughtful and obedient wife....
They taught me to be silent and respect my JW MIL
They taught me how to raise my kids to be obedient little servants...
Then I threw grew up and left..

The few things that I did benefit by from being a JW could have been obtained elsewhere - and for considerably less overall cost.
(Others may disagree, perhaps: - but it does not seem to make much sense to throw away your opportunities for a college education; and donate your retirement fund to the WTS; in return for "free" training in public speaking at the Ministry School!)
There are a lot of good people amongst the JWs, but no more than amongst the population in general. Certainly, the Witnesses don't have the monopoly on good people, as they seem to think they do. In recent years, I have met up once more with friends I had before "coming into the truth." This experience reminded me of the many excellent people I knew before I became a JW, and these days I am rather saddened that I fell for the WTS propaganda that all non-JWs ("worldly people") were automatically evil.
So yes, it is true enough - as far as it goes - to say that the JW experience did deliver certain benefits:
- the trouble is, it does not go far enough!
That is how the whole experience has affected me, anyway.
Bill.

The best thing for me is I didnt go to Vietnam and get killed or crippled.
The witnesses dont go to war.
War is just a way for the rich to make more money.

Yes, you do save money on holiday lights and presents, party supplies, and the like. You don't spend money on decorations--you only spend it on gas to do field circus, Worldwide Pedophile Defense Fund donations, McDonald's every day, suit dry cleanings, and the lost opportunity to get a better paying job.
You avoid the crowds at Walmart by not celebrating Christmas. You just have to deal with them, one on one, trying to get them to switch their religion.

I have to admit, that coming from a pretty rough neighborhood, there's a possibility it might have kept me away from some venereal disease, the State Penitentiary, or the morgue.

If assembly food was the highlight of being a Witness, what else is there to say??
