When one believes in the bible, one also has to distance themselves from using such things as a

rational base of reasoning, contemporary pragmatism, avoidance of critical thinking skills circumvented

on a small framework of knowledge, just to name a few.

Certainly the seers/scribes of the ancient Israelites were not practitioners of these elements of

cognitive thought. Should blame be dutifully put onto this human generation, I don't think so,

for that civilization in that era of mankind existence were mentally constrained on knowledge

of the world they lived in, the same world which we live in today.

    dear Terry...

you've been posting on here for over 6 years and you aren't aware of what most people are willing to believe yet? this kinda seems like counting allies......

there is a saying, "don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone"...

I can't see anyone holding much sway over mahmoud ahmadinejad et. al. pleading secularism, or pluralism for that matter.

That would depend on what one believes the bible to be.

I always find it amussing when someone insinuates that believers are "irrational" lakc "critical thinking" and so forth, as if non-believers some how have those qualities over believers.

Here is a list of athiests and agnostics that became religious:

Obviously they lost all those amazing abilities.

Why has religion gradually lost attention of such a wide grasp of the human population in the last century ?

    Short answer = Knowledge

Why has mankind indulged itself in religion or spiritual beliefs for centuries prior to the last century ?

    Short answer = Ignorance

Pulling straws out of a bundle doesn't uphold a positive argument

Wow PS - that's a short list. Thanks for pointing out to us how few people who have critical thinking skills have fallen into the trap of faith in magic!

I agree and resonate with this

When you speak amongst a crowd passionately you MOVE them and they talk endlessly about it.

It depends on what is meant by the word "believe."

If to believe in the bible means to accept it as a history (but not the only history) of the Hebrew people, and their attempt to explain the world around them, then I can accept that. But that is all!

    - As for it being an accurate historical record: not unless it is confirmed by other sources.

    - As for it being a moral code: the "Eye for an Eye" talk (and other revolting practices) of the Old Testament fail badly.

    - As for it being an accurate scientific record: the bible is not even close.

    - And as for it being a collection of writings that are inspired by some divine being: no bloody way! (Not one I would want to worship, anyway).

    Bill.

I hear this. And also amusing is when someone goes on to say that believers are arrogant, as if that doesn't show up in this very attitude as well :)

The bible is as real to me as the 1981 version of Clash of the Titans (The Greeks had their mythology just as the Christians do).

    :)
