Judge, it's about motive. This isn't because they want to give them loving company. They can count their time and that's it.

    But. . .

My jw ladies told me to have the "earthly hope" you had to be well advanced in studies, going out in service etc., if not actually baptised.

If jw people are sharing time and uplifting stories with these old folks, that's charitable. They cannot expect that they will reach this level of "truth" so how can they count the time?

Retrovirus: Because every JW I've ever met believes secretly that Jehovah will judge hearts and not the religious affilication of a person at armageddon. Every JW I've ever known has known "good" worldy people, and they all believe God will take this into account when the time comes. I have yet to meet a JW that tows the party line that only baptized JWs in good standing who don't live a double life will be the only people to survive.

Edit: Publicly they might, but privately they absolutely do not.

    Thanks, Razziel,

Great insight. So at some level all or nearly all jws disbelieve the wt line! And of course they can't share this with someone they're hoping to bring into the fold.

It must be so hard to remain a "good" jw these days.

This was totally "the thing" when I was pioneering about 20 years ago. Our congregation had 18 pioneers and only a few of them (me being one of them) didn't have at least one study with at least one completely batty old lady. Back then I was really gung ho and dedicated, but there was no way I could, in good conscience, count time with somebody who obviously had no idea what was going on.

I noticed this recently when I went to vist my grandmother on her death bed. There was a monthly schedule on the wall, the jws have a study there every Monday morning at 11 am.

Razz I love your reasoning about Jehovah needing to the vindication of his name by allowing all the suffering. I just do not get how a God of love can see all of this and still think his name is worth all the suffering.

Judge I have nothing against JW's spending time with older people but I do have something against them not caring about the person and just using them to count time. I made friends with an older lady who was in her early 90's. Her family lived about 400 miles away and could not visit often enough for her. I really enjoyed just talking with her. Her mind was very sharp we talked about religion and she told me she had always felt Jehovah's Witnesses were a cult.

This lady loved to go to the movies but with her age had a hard time being able to go, so I would take her. I told my regular pioneer girlfriend once that I was taking her to a move that night. I never told her the lady thought we were a cult though. My girlfriend who studies with nursing home people told me I should not be doing that. I said why? She told me that her family could sue me if she fell or got hurt. Yet I know JW's that will take people out of the nursing home and drag them to a meeting if they can. What if they got hurt doing that? Her answer was we are doing Jehovah's will going to a move is not Jehovah's will.

I think even if it is not for the right reason the older people still get company but my point is that it is all so stupid that JW's feel like they have to count hours not truly helping people.

About twenty years ago I spent a few hours a week volunteering in a nursing home. I never thought about having a study and counting my time even though I was a witness in good standing at the time. I visited with them, helped them write letters, occasionally helped with toileting, and also pushed their wheelchairs down the hall to the cafeteria for lunch. In retrospect, I could have been a pioneer!

jw's are like vultures waiting in the wings for the most vulnerable times of people's lives. From death of a loved one, illness, mental illness, suicide, and now captive audience of people in wheelchairs who have no option but to sit and listen wherever someone parks them. (I worked in a nursing home and yes they get 'parked' in the halls, day rooms, etc...) My jw has done things like this, he has preached at family members who had no escape and/or were in the most vulnerable time of their life (or sent other jw's to do the dirty work). He is a good guy but many will never truly forgive him these disgusting attempts at getting his time in. He was newbie full of zeal but it is still no excuse. It got so bad for awhile that nobody would leave any kids alone with him anywhere. Family function- oh oh, he's outside with xx someone go out there! Mine even did something worse to an elderly relative which I will not post here but ....grrrrr! it makes my blood boil just thinking of it!

    Vultures.
