Some of the nursing homes in my area allow church ministries to come to the facilities, the pioneers in my area take advantage of this. I recall a pioneer studying with a wheel chair bound woman. She hounded that lady; coordinated her rides to the meetings and assemblies, made sure she got out in field service and gatherings. When she finally got baptised, we never saw her again at the KH. The pioneer moved on to the next victim and dropped all of her previous efforts at helping this woman.

A couple pioneers did this at my former congregation. They read the Bible and even used the Bible story book and the elderly people gathereed around them. One even admitted some fell asleep.
I read where for dementia patients music is more effective in reaching them. But, I doubt the Kingdom Melodies would do much good.
I read so many fine results have come from those who take therapy dogs into nursing homes. It really moves the patients so much more than giving them false hope.

Koolaid-man:
You have got to be one of the most cynical people I have ever come across.
Remember it is not the head honchos visiting these it is everyday Witness like we were.
Yes, they may be trying to get in easy time, but they are not trying to take people's money.

I dated a sister back in the early 80's from a different circuit and her congregation was really into the whole study with the elderly found in nursing homes thing. .
One day we were out in service and the three of us went to the local nursing home to visit my friends "study" a 90 year old woman.
When she saw me she stood up, and grabbed my arm,,,, wouldn't let go. Everyone was flabbergasted, because she was never that excited to see anyone.
Well we soon found out why. According to her I was a spitting image of her long dead husband.
It was a little weird walking around the home with her hanging onto me. needless to say there was no study that day !
These days I have a therapy dog,, the elderly really seem to like that much more than reading the wt literature !

but who do you think is encouraging them to witness in nursing homes?
The WTS doesn't directly encourage the witnesses to witness in nursing homes, nor do they do it indirectly.
As others have said, it's used as an easy way to get pioneer hours in. The same reason why so many would do "cup of tea" studies - come in, make polite chat, talk about the latest scripture or chapter of the book being studied, then chat some more. Have a cup of tea and bikkies, you're sitting down in a comfortable chair, easy hour or two to mark up for the day.
Getting money for the WTS isn't a priority for pioneers.

*** km 2/06 p. 8 par. 7 Use Visual Aids That Teach ***
Other Opportunities: How else can you use our 20 different videos? Would showing one or two of them to someone you visit regularly help him to progress spiritually? Could you offer to show the videos at a local nursing home or a center for senior citizens? Would the videos help to win the respect of your non-Witness relatives, neighbors, and workmates? Our videos are impressive, instructive, and effective visual aids. Use them to teach.

Our goal is to contact everyone we can. With this in mind, some publishers have been successful in witnessing to people in doctor’s offices, hospitals, nursing homes, welfare offices, and rehabilitation centers.
*** km 12/93 p. 1 par. 5 Set Aside Time for Magazine Activity ***
Each one should have a standing order for a set number of distributors’ copies of each issue of the magazines. When on occasion you have older issues on hand, these may be used to show householders the variety of subjects covered in the magazines. From time to time, a set of older copies may be left at retirement homes, nursing homes, and hospitals where allowed. All such magazines can be counted as placements and are to be reported each month on your Field Service Report slip.
