So me, of all people, had a religious experience

Keep in mind that it will happen again sooner or later according to statistics, but it might take millions of hands.

Or you could ask for that proof again and make it happen on the first try.

But what will you think if it does happen right away or after millions of times? What will you think if it doesn't happen right away or after millions of times?

And yet, some materialists take that same to someone relating an unexplainable experience.

I would like to see some examples, Satanus, but I can allow that it is probably true because there are different flavours of materialists just like there are different flavours of Christians, or of any other major religious group, in the world. This board never ceases to surprise me with the diversity of its contributors and there's no doubt there are many convinced people here, convinced one way or another. I will allow that I might be operating at some level of faith. I am relatively certain there are still things I just perceive to be true based on my life's experience so far, but that doesn't mean I won't entertain a factual counter proposal. I appreciate the experience of having my bubble burst because so far every belief abandoned for lack of evidence brings another level of emancipation. This is the road to freedom for many people inside the WTBTS. Once they truly begin to challenge what they have been told to believe and begin to seek evidence for it the emancipation process begins.

If you tell me (in a public forum to which I belong) that you have had an unexplainable experience, and I attempt to provide you with an explanation of what made your experience possible outside of the supernatural context, I would expect a courteous reply, even if it has a little edge. And that is exactly how Sab has responded tp the posts of everyone, including the skeptics like me. Show me a materialist who tells you he's right and he just knows it but can't provide evidence for his assertion, and I will personally call him on it.

Cofty, that's a great quote in your 886 post. I for one am thankful that the scientific method plays no favorites and seeks to question the hell out of each and every theory that passes before it.

Why should ordinary life be any different?

EDIT: I'm also thankful for brave scientists who put crazy hypotheses out there because they had the balls to think outside the bun box.

On this thread, they haven't been that fundy, i suppose. But, there were a couple of others, over the yrs, where the experiencer was all but gored for bringing his/her experience here. I remember when dolphman related his wierd kundalini symptoms. I'm not going to do a search, though.

There has been a pattern on jwd/jwn of attacking anyone who believes in the supernatural - God or angels or the afterlife etc. Those that like things like the tarot etc have been ridiculed a lot. It would seem to me ( and others too) that those who believe in such things should be allowed to discuss them in a thread without being called mentally ill, stupid etc. I find Fundy's who go onto threads where atheist's are talking and try and preach to them offensive. I also find it equally offensive to do that to those who do believe in God or angels or the supernatural. Can't they talk among themselves without being called names?

Violia, do you consider it rude for someone to offer a scientific (or probabalistic) explanation for something thought to be paranormal by others?

Another one. Why is it Christians are so hostile toward atheists?

And another atheist who thinks he knows everything.

FYI, I am not a Christian. I'm a Jew and pretty much secular. For a man who loves logic so much, your statement was presumptuous.

I wonder why atheists are so hostile and presumptuous towards others?

Well done, but you might want to be careful about sounding so rational, OTWO. You might be called childish and bitchy by someone who does not like what you are saying.

No matter how you try to spin this thing, and no matter how much you try to dismiss me as somebody who doesn't like what you are saying, THE TRUTH is I do not disagree with you on many points nor did I challenge you on them. However, what you said to JO was childish, negative and bitchy and you should be called on it.

So much for the noble and enlightened atheist.

Hey, can I buy you a beer? Or, better, an 18 year old single malt? I'm not into dueling intellects, but I might enjoy having a drink with you. You never know. Do you like people who have opinions different from yours, or maybe not?

perhaps it's time to withdraw your claws, and to readjust your sense of justice.
