    His opening statement was:

    terra ridicula,

You have made a preposterous claim and presented preposterous evidence.

    You blathered:

:Now Tea Party dominated Republicans want to enslave children!

Idiot. Your arguments are as foolish as your screaming.

:Yet many of their ilk say that violent insurrection is needed against those who oppose them! The bill below, presented by Republicans in Maine, aims to weaken child labor laws. Of note are the following provisions meant to "enhance" lives of minors:

"Ilk" is an ad hominem, you know when it is used in the context you are using it.

    Give up?

Laws were put in place to PROTECT children from exploitation and manipulation - socially, economically, physically, mentally and emotionally. We decided to create a more civilized society that embraced more equal opportunity for our kids so that all of them could have a chance of improving their lot in life. The myth of opportunity for all is just that a myth - that's why the civil rights movement was important, womens rights, childrens rights and workers rights.

Times are changing. People with college degrees are unemployed in greater numbers than ever. Global competition is rampant and yes - a living wage should be instituted all over the world so the playing field is levelled. Technology is eliminating or reducing labor quickly and we are speeding up to the time when there will simply be more people than jobs available. Then what?

Instead of such short term plans, wouldn't it be nice to see some long term planning about what we do as a country, as part of the global machine, about our people and our ability to sustain a population in a healthy, safe and productive way? sammies

A living wage in the US does not equal a living wage in China...

Spoken like a real citizen of the world. Do you think the US should be the one to impose this on the world? Or the UN?

So an unskilled worker who breaks his back 8 hours a day for 30 years doesn't deserve a living wage? Gotcha. Most of America's workers are "unskilled". How does lowering minimum wages keep the economy rolling when it's 2/3 consumer spending?

What about the effect that kids working longer hours at a younger age will have on their schooling? Way to strengthen America's viability in a global market, huh?

I hire people at my place of employment for positions that are entry level. A high school diploma is not even a requirement for these jobs. Because of this I feel that I have a very good handle on hiring practices and labor relations which is why I don't agree with dear Ber's statement.

We're not talking about HS diplomas. We are talking about being able to hire "labor" at less than the current minimum wage.

Ber darling, you stated that this would lead to higher unemployment for older Americans and I disagreed because of what I know to be true from my job. I didn't say anything about and wasn't talking about the fairness or unfairness of this particular bill.

    Quit jerkin' yer knees.

I really don't understand the bickering going on here. Let me get this straight, one side says that the government shouldn't interfere with setting a minimum wage and that it should be the free markets that determine what that should be yet in the same breath they seem to be defending this bill which sets a trainee wage dictated by...the government. So what is it, the market or the government?

I personally feel that such a bill is bullshit and the idea of a government-mandated trainee wage far below the minimum for 180 days is institutionalized exploitation and just another Republican cookie tossed to corporate interests. I worked my ass off as a kid and held multiple jobs growing up and if the government came around saying that my labor was worth less than someone 21 years old I would be FUMING.

My ever lovin' pal Sooner, I stand by the notion that younger workers would be hired in place of older workers because they can be hired at a lower than minimum wage. Thus increasing unemployment for older workers. Just as paying workers "under the table", as in illegal immigration, can do. If the principal that undocumented workers are increasing unemployment for American workers is true, so must child labor at a lower wage be also.
