Oh sure, just like how they told the youth explicitly in 1969 to NOT pursue higher education because they won't grow old in this system.
I've seen way too many intelligent minds wasted because of this guilt trip inflicted upon anyone who even desires to do any form of studying.
Of course the society never provides financially for any of its members, so if you heed their advice and in 40 years time you don't have a pot to piss in, then that's simply your bad luck and not their problem. Meanwhile, the GB are living in a deeeeeeluxe apartment in the sky-y-y like The Jeffersons, without a care in the world.

They say its a scriptural obligation to provide for your family. They say no college but then dont provide any answers on how you are supposed to support your family. The WT is full of jerks.

RETROVIRUS- You're right. The WT society's efforts to tether and control the NEXT generation will fail for sure. Most JW parents would rather their young adult children rot away pioneering than get a career that would help them live in the REAL world. But it creates dependent adult children who can't provide for themselves. Sorry you had to go through bankruptcy- I did too many years ago after my 1st JW wife ran up $ 20,000 on the credit cards in the 1980'and 1990's. I've since recovered financially but it took a lot of work and divorcing the JW wife.
WTWIZARD- Good point you make - A person CAN and DOES often become a victim of burnout in a religion. I knew many JW's who got burned out pushing hard for the WT society. I was one of those too. As you mentioned if we get burned out working at a job, self employed or not- at least we have SOME monetary benefit to show for our efforts. Not so in the JW cult.
SCARY 21- Yes it's very arrogant of the WT society to tell young people " you don't have to live up to your parents education expectations " . I mean, who in the hell does the WT society think they are telling young people to ignore their parents wishes and then come work for the WT society's wishes ? Makes me mad as hell to see the WT society minimizing family relationships between children and their parents. But that however is a tactic ALL mind control cults use ! Including Jehovah's Witnesses.
CHEERIOS- It's not just uneducated window washers that will believe anything - it's MOST of Jehovah's Witnesses who will believe anything the WT society teaches them. They are ALL mind controlled no matter what trade they are in.
RADHESYAM- Yep. Many JW's were window washers & janitors. Many still are after exiting the cult unfortunately.
ROOM 215- Your comment " Wider options generally grants one more control over one's circumstances and therefore more personal independence. " And therein lies most of the problem being raised a Jehovah's Witness in my opinion in regards to education and employment. You are not ALLOWED wider options. It's either graduate High School and pioneer, or go to work full time at a low hourly paid job and struggle to survive. Thus many JW's don't HAVE personal control OR independence because the WT society steals that control and independence from them ! And that's EXACTLY how the WT society wants JW's to be- so they can control their lives.
MINDSEYE- Very good take which I agree with. Your comment " Dogmatic religions teach you WHAT to think. A solid college education teaches you HOW to think. " I think this scares the WT leaders so yes, they are demonizing college education again. They don't want Witnesses thinking for themselves. They want to think for them.
NUGGET- Very good points you bring out about the WT organization encouraging mediocrity among it's JW members. I agree. Nobody is allowed to feel too special as all the credit is to go to God or Jesus. The old " we are good for nothing slaves- what we have done is what we ought to have done. " Sheesh. My elder dad threw that one at me all the time growing up as a JW. And as you said people can be controlled inside Jehovah's Witnesses with the threat of having their privileges removed ! They treat everybody like they are little kids. It's ridiculous.
JUSTHUMAN 14- I'm so sorry you lost out on a music career my friend. I enjoy music too ( like to sing ) and I would have enjoyed something similar perhaps. You are right- the older we get we become less financilly marketable to a prospective employer - so the WT society did us absolutely NO favors insisting we keep putting " Kingdom interests first " , er WT interests first. As you stated, lots of precious lives are being wasted for sure.

LONG HAIR GAL- I feel the WT society is running scared as well with lots of young people , perhaps 18 - 35 yr.olds leaving the JW cult. They are definiely feeling threatened and as you say with access to the Internet and information available to them- many young people aren't going to stand for a bunch of old farts in Bethel telling them how to run their lives , education, or jobs anymore. I do believe that young people are becoming more courageous in this time period now and standing up for themselves. Even though I'm middle aged- I'm gonna do what I can to assist them to KEEP standing up for themselves because I know what's at stake- their future. And you are correct- WT society couldn't give a rats a$$ if JW's make a living or not- WT society just wants to get their share of JW's income , time, and possessions.
MINIMUS- Yes, WT society IS embarrassing.
SIR 82- Thanks for that graph and information showing the more education you get- the unemployment figures go down ! Good stats. Thanks for sharing. And we don't see that in a WT magazine - because essentially they don't care about Witnesses employment future. As long as Witnesses slave for the WT society- it's all that matters to them.
FINALLY FREE- Exactly. WT society has always taught that with Armageddon right around the corner, imminent in fact- that JW's don't nEED an education - they get all theeducation they need from reading WT publications. Or as you say they'll learn more in the Paradise when " all will be revealed ". How lame.
RULES & REGULATIONS- Thanks. How great of you to help your children get a college education ! Good for you. You've REALLY helped your kids have a better shot at a successful future ! I feel for your cousins & sibling in their 50's - it's tough to get hired in our midlife years. WT society really doesn't care which is sad. Yet JW's are deceived to THINK the WT society really cares. That's even sadder.

MAGWITCH- I'm sorry your ex-husband got so involved in congregation pursuits that he neglected you and your children. I'm sure that was a very hurtful experience to see the JW cult consume him to the point of destroying your family life. You have my deepest sympathies. I do hope you have found happiness after exiting the cult and marriage. You are correct- the WT society destroys families AND marriages. It destroyed my first marriage as well.

It's the epitome of insult to a poor JW trying to barely scrape by and make ends meet when they are told " go ahead, quit your job if your employer won't let you time off for assemblies ! Jehovah will provvide you another job ! " I mean, it's assanine ! WT society should be required to pay for unemployment insurance for every JW who follows that advice ! Doubtful though. Look at all the aging Bethelites the WT society gave pink slips to the last few years with nowhere to go or a pot to piss in. WT society is not big on charity or helping poor ones.

REALITY 79- You bring out excellent points ! We all were told NOT to plan for a future in this " system of things " because it would end in 1975 or shortly thereafter. But if any had waited to save for retirement- 40 years down the road, what do they have now ? Nothing ! As you said WT society DOES NOT CARE what happens to JW members personally- just as long as WT society gets THEIR SHARE ! Meanwhile as you say the GB sits in a lap of luxury having everything handed to them without having to work like 7 million JW's do. It's disgusting.
THE REVEALER- Theocratic school only trains JW's for theocratic activities- not living in the real world.

The WT society essentially cuts the hands off of people for earning a good, decent living by not allowing them to go to college but they provide NO support to help Witnesses earn a living ! They just say " go out door to door in the field service and Jah will provide for you ! ' A bunch of BS. WE each have to make OUR OWN way and success, nobody will do it for us

Has anyone seen the Sistine Chapel? A Vermeer? A Mozart concert? The Beatles? They speak to my heart. Knowing some things about them is nice but the impact sin't mediated by the knowledge. Why not learn skills and culture and use that knowledge for the Society? How can the WT print this article and pay for WOMEN to go to law school? Why do they scour KHS looking for speciailized degrees that can't be picked up quickly?
The time is short no longer seems applicable, IMO. What is so threatening? Maybe all JWs should go and wait for New Light?
Sometimes I believe a liberal arts degree is too touted by general society. It is now worth as much as a high school degree once was. Of course, the techonology and required ability to relearn happens muc h more frequently. There are a variety of voc tech skills that pay extremely well. Apprenticeships. Violin makers, chocolatiers. Interior design. The arts.
I don't feel I know much concrete info from college. Every step along the way my critical thinking skills improved. I attended college in the late 1960s on a very turbulent campus. If there was one theme I heard from every prof it was what to defer to authroity blindly. Particpatory democracy was once important. I suppose I gained a new sense of entitelment. It was a big change from JW culture. College made me much more active in my life. It wasn't any paritcular subjet or anything. Only the atomsphere.
I'd argue about authroity but the Roman Catholic Church had much wider authority over everyone's lifes and yet learning was preserved in monasteries and convents.

Ha, I don't spend much more time on school work that your average dub does on their 9-5 job. I'm fortunate enough to get paid to go to school- some teaching tasks every now and then but most of my time has been spent on my research.
Why is what I do "bad" but a dub who spends an equivalent amount of time at Ace Hardware loading pallets is a-OK? Seriously- my time is an investment in the future, when I graduate I'll be making even more $ and will have to work less than I work now.
I wonder what goes through my mom's head when she reads all of this about higher education and "apostate ideas" (she knows that I, a baptized JW, don't believe anymo')
