Okay, what is the double standard and what is the false set of scales? Since Christ spoke out vehemently against hypocrisy, then the one thing that God is not, is a hypocrite. We may misunderstand what He meant for us (as I am sure that we do), but He is not a hypocrite, nor unjust. Perhaps your definition of justice does not include that this justice be tempered by mercy... but perhaps THE definition of justice is just that; tempered by mercy? Just think about the end result on a worldwide scale. Eye for eye would ruin us all - or at the very least, NEVER, put an end to wars, hatred, revenge-seeking. There would never be peace.

Plus, God expects us to show mercy; even as we are shown mercy by him. "By the measure you use, it will be measured against you."

The difference between is that we cannot read another's hearts (nor are any of us without sin that we can cast the first stone), but God can and is both of these.

    Peace,

    Tammy

God chose a people for his name (the Jews) out of all the people on earth and made a covenant with them.

He gave them His laws and the penalty for violating each was clearly stated.

Where in the Law was there provision for mercy? Mercy in the sense you could get away with, say, MURDER if you said you were really sorry?

If the law was PERFECT and it had no mercy--how is mercy in any way better than perfection?

The cities of refuge could hide people being pursued by relatives of victims killed.

Is this mercy? For whom? How?

Who says the law was perfect without mercy?

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices - mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law - justice, mercy and faithfulness."

Christ spoke a great deal about mercy, telling me that it WAS a part of the law. One of the most important matters of the law. If it wasn't emphasized enough in the writings of the OT - then perhaps that is where the scribes mishandled it.

There is also a difference between saying you're sorry, and being sorry, Terry. We don't always know the difference. God does.

    Peace,

    Tammy
