A Sneaky Way To Mess With Watchtower Statistics

The Watchtower Society is addicted to numbers and growth. The problem is that their very existence is justified by a preaching work that is intended to result in growth. Other religions don't have that kind of pressure. Another problem is that their growth is slowing down. They have done much to continue their perceived growth such as change their reporting requirements and invest in areas and demographic groups that don't result in much income or many high quality publishers. Nevertheless, they will have to face the fact that their growth is slowing and may even stop or become negative in a few years. This is especially a danger when 2014 comes and the "last days" become the "last centuries". It will be hard for them to maintain the zeal they have had in the past.

My thought is that if they can try to manipulate and boost their figures for their own purposes, why can't apostates also try to manipulate their cherished statistics for our own purposes.

This isn't easy because we can't report negative numbers on the time slips. However, it is possible to artificially boost our reports during strategic times and then withdraw this support when it is likely to do the most damage. The situation is something like a country that tries to manipulate the price of its currency. Japan, for example, likes to have a cheap yen to help exports. It will occasionally sell vast quantities of yen in order to lower it's price. Of course, in order to sell these vast quantities of yen, they must first buy them which tends to inflate the price of yen. However, if they do this carefully and strategically they have a chance of encouraging lower prices, or at least giving the impression that they are committed to lower prices which may beneficial politically.

Apostates may have a never to be repeated opportunity to do something similar. In order for the statistics of the Watchtower Society to decline, they must first reach a peak. We can help this to happen sooner and make the eventual decline more dramatic.

The 2014 report will be very crucial and interesting. If the growth is disappointing or even negative, then it will only compound other problems they are already having. It would make sense for those who are currently stuck in that organization to reduce their reporting that year. If they can not turn in a time slip for August, 2014, that will be especially valuable since August is usually the month when the peak amount of publishers is reached.

This effect can be even more dramatic if the time reports are padded during 2012 and 2013. This isn't hard and may even reduce the pressure on those who are still in, but don't believe.

Some may feel this is dishonest. Others may just look at it as "theocratic warfare". After all, if you or your family are being held hostage by an evil corporation, a little deception may be called for. However, even a completely honest report could account for the fact that most businesses start paying when you show up for work (instead of when you knock on your first door) and make allowances for short paid breaks. I also don't see why you couldn't count time for talking about Jehovah's Witnesses and the Bible on JWN.

In any case, the idea is out there. It doesn't require any coordination. People can just make a personal decision about whether they want to do this. Even if it doesn't do much on a worldwide level, it could still have an important effect on the country or congregation level. I hope the Bethel spies will read this and start to wonder if their stats will be manipulated in a way that they can't control. It could also call into question whether any increases in the next few years are real, even if this plan isn't implemented.

    I welcome your comments.

What are a few dozen (or hey, optimistically a few hundred) time reports going to do? When you're on the scale of a billion hours, adding or subtracting a few thousand is meaningless. I think it would be suspicious if you started putting in time reports of 75,430 hours a month but thats what you'd basically need to do with the few people on here that would actaully do it it.

Nice idea but, no dice I"m afraid.

"What are a few dozen (or hey, optimistically a few hundred) time reports going to do?"

Probably not much on a worldwide scale, but a couple in a congregation could have a dramatic effect and might even cause some panic among the elders when the stats start to decline for their congregation and they don't know how to fix it.

2014 will not be significant to JWs except they will say "Its been 100 years, the end has to be right around the corner." Then they will forget about it and it will rarely be brought up again.

Another idea is to not turn in a timeslip for July in 2012 and 2013, but turn in two for August for those years. If no timeslip is turned in for August 2014 it will make a difference of a two publisher decline for every apostate who does this. If only a few hundred apostate do this, it could make a significant dent. There is even a small chance it could turn an increase into a decrease for certain countries, if not the whole world.

I think this is an easy way to sabotage the Watchtower power structure. They rely on statistics for decision making and for allocating resources. If we can help mess with their reporting system, even a little bit, it will increase their paranoia and reduce their ability to make informed decisions.

As an example, if apostates report more magazines placed, it will likely result in more magazines being ordered and cause some financial damage. It's not much, but it's something and many who are trapped may welcome anything that can be easily done to reduce the influence of the Watchtower Society.

Planting bad information is an essential battle tactic. Why wouldn't we want to do the same thing for an organisation that is holding many of our friends and relatives hostage?

Dude, it's just a drop in the bucket.

7 million active JWs turn in time every month, and getting a couple hundred closeted apostates to make up numbers is going to make a difference in "allocating resources"?

    200 / 7,000,000 = 0.003%

Besides, the numbers are hopelessly screwed up anyway - out of each "hour" spent in the preaching work, maybe 3 or 4 minutes is spent actually "preaching". The rest is spent driving around aimlessly, walking between doors, knocking at not-at-homes, getting coffee, and generally wasting time. Not to mention all the "rounding up" ("oh it's 11:45? Better head back to the hall now...ah well, pretty close to 2 hours") that goes on.

The Society knows this and doesn't care. They won't care if there's a 0.003% "blip" in one month's report in 2014 either.

I think some of us are underestimating how many people are trapped in the organization who want to leave but can't. The problem is that they are usually prevented from having a voice. Most organizations couldn't survive with that level of internal disagreement, but the Watchtower is brutal enough to keep limping along.

I want to show that there are things that can be done to waste their resources and confuse their information gathering. There may also be some apostates who collect time cards or do other record keeping that may be in a position to distort their statistics in a more meaningful way.

DT you are a genius. I think you are right. Anyway, aren't they called lemmings because they move to good or bad together? Who knows if the ruse won't spread unseen to even the loyal ones? You know the power of the "air"?
