The oldest traditional wedding vows can be traced back to the middle ages to the ‘Book of Common Prayer,’ published in 1549. Upon agreement to marry, the Church of England usually offered couples a choice. They could both promise each other to 'love and cherish' or alternatively, the groom promises to 'love, cherish and worship' while the bride to 'love, cherish and obey.'
the groom promises to 'love, cherish and worship' while the bride to 'love, cherish and obey.'
I think that the writers must have had much broader definitions than people seem to have today with regards to "to Worship"or to obey" the word 'Worship" here seems to mean to acknowledging someone as the center of your universe and what gives you purpose and meaning.
And the word obey I'll just leave that alone !
Regardless even if the vows are today are changed to the more appealing .... to love, cherish and respect
"two out of three "most likely won't cut it... will not make a lasting happy union.... Unless you adore your mate..." To regard with deep love and admiration".....
more like the feelings expressed in this song ... time and circumstance will become your enemy
