Why is it that serious /important topics seem to be overlooked and fluffy inconsequential topics get all the attention

Probably because now that we aren't witnesses anymore, we can balance fun with seriousness. I enjoy both kinds of threads. There are usually enough of both. I'd find JWN boring if everyone had to be all serious all the time like well, a bunch of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Most of the truly serious thread makers left JWN a while ago. I miss them. They were the anchor of this site. For newcomers, I guess you just have to go back and get to know them through the old posts and threads. I miss Hillary Step.

20-30 years ago xJWs were interested in christian theology, many became professed christians and the debates on doctrine and grammar went on and on. Now I see the newer crop of xJWs with broader interests in politics, their communities, economics etc.. Its nice to see.

I don't generally feel qualified to post on serious topics.

So is this thread "serious" or "fluffy"....? For me, threads on the trinity and what it means to be a christian are fluffy. Theology of any sort is fluffy. Threads on 'ways to bring down the wt' are fantasy and fluffy.

Serious threads from my POV tend to be those that deal with moving on or helping people who are struggling with issues related to leaving. Threads that deal with people and everyday life are serious to me.

But really, "serious" or "fluffy" are perspectve ;-)

You raise an important question smiddy and have received some very good responses.

Many long time posters have been involved in long debates battling to defend their point of view. This is therapeutic and helps to resolve the issues that they came here with. In time their agenda changes and they leave. Often they find they no longer have an agenda but hang around having a little fun until boredom causes them to fade away. Like every playground we do eventually outgrow the class and find a more fulfilling pastime.

I use the word ‘agenda’ because the most prolific posters on this board have an agenda that they feel compelled to push. They are on a mission. It could be that trying to convince others that they have ‘the truth’ is a way of convincing themselves that their belief is the right one.

Heavy debates invariably lead nowhere. They often degenerate into cat fights with name calling and personal insults. Stirring the pot is not for everyone and sometime the light relief of a fluff thread is a welcome respite.

Elderelite makes a really good point.

Also, people post about what interests them. A lot of people enjoy fluff. Me, not so much. Frankly I get bored of wading through all the in-jokes and 'kiss the monkey' stuff sometimes (sorry Shamus ). I come here for support and to give support. I know that if a thread is started by certain people, such as Terry, AKJeff, flipper, TD, cedars, Mary, rebel8, 3rdgen, talesin, purplesofa, nugget, sabastious, Lunatic faith, AllTimeJeff (not an exhaustive list, just the first names that spring to mind), then I am likely to enjoy reading it. I go less off the titles and more by the OP.
