Why Are These Islamists So Touchy?

To assume that all Islamists are the same as their e x tremists, is to assume that all Christians are the same as their e x tremists. I KNOW the latter is untrue, so I must assume that the former could well be untrue in the same way. I do think that the Quran promotes more extreme behavior from its adherents, but I have also read where the book places more emphasis on mercy. So I guess it depends upon what the Islamist wants to read and see and hear; and for some of those in power, what they want to emphasize to get other to help them reach their personal ambitions.

Another point is respect. We don't have that much of it here in this sense: we will insult and belittle and condescend and show no respect whatsoever for what some place great importance upon, or for the people who place that importance. We mock people for their beliefs, and things they cherish. This comes with freedom of speech, which of course is a good thing. It is just unfortunate that some abuse that right to cast off respect for others who think and believe differently than them.

Tammy touches on a good point about extremists. Part of the problem lies in that fact that a thousand people rioting makes interesting TV, a million people sitting at home and reading the Quran and wishing the 1000 would knock it off, doesn't.

That said, Islam teaches that the Quran (every copy) is to be treated like the actual words of God. Therefore to disrespect it is to disrespect God. Although that doesn't stop them from using it to pass illegal messages to each other in jail, which is where this started. Religion, as we all know is not necessarily logical in its application.

We should respect others but we have no obligation to respect risible superstitious beliefs.

When will people learn to let god fight his own battles? Why must they act for god? I don't give a damn how holy and revered the Qu'ran is, a person should not be killed because of disrespecting it. That is an overreaction.

I have respect for religion. I have no respect for religion that teaches its members to be fanatical whether they be Islamists, Baptists or JWs.

    The 'wackos' get the press.

Also agree with what 6 just said. Bomb the shit out of them is as extremist as the ones you want to bomb the shit out of.

You are not respecting someone if you are mocking and ridiculing what they place great value upon. You don't have to agree with their belief, and you can certainly state this and why. But how you disagree can be respectful... or not.

Al Queda is active in Iraq with mounting bombings of their own people- just the different branch of Islam, women and little kids dying, not much penetrates the sensibilities of religious fanatics.
