Speaking as an American, it seems to me that over here there's always been a perception that our friends across the river are a bit sharper, more literate, and sophisticated than we, but that's probably just what it is, a perception thing.

Raw intelligence, IQ, is different than education. I know little about British public schools but I suspect they are far better than those in the US. It continually shocks me how illiterate US High School graduates frequently are.
