BOTR - There is no standard UK accent. It varies even between towns. I live in Southampton, my neighbouring city is Portsmouth (less than 10 miles away, you can tell the difference in accent even between these near neighbours. (you can also tell the difference between the great big smile on a Southampton soccor fans face as opposed to the depressed look on a Portsmouth supporter's face).

May I ask the Brits what the standard nonbroadcast accent is like?
There is no standard accent. There are a huge variety of accents in the UK, every city and region has its own unique accent. Where I live the accents are significantly different in a town 15 miles north of here than they are in my town and very different again from the city 50 miles to the south.
