My hubby and I would like to do a bit of traveling overseas. Hubby asked where was the first place I wanted to go and I said England of course.

Further to the discussion about the different codes of football , and the levels of security / law enforcement required:

    - it has often been said that "Soccer is a gentleman's game played by hooligans, whereas rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen." (who are admittedly not too gentle while out on the field!).

    Bill.

This is a class distinction. Americans have a very distorted view of British society. We watch PBS Mastperiece Theatre, assume everyone attends Oxbridge, and can write as well as Shakespeare.

The IQ levels must be the same. I don't know about class fluidity anymore. When I grew up, America was considered to present many more opportunities for someone williing to work who is not aristocratic. A historian wrote that all of the American Founders would have been locked by class in England. Our giants would be middling class in England. American is much less class fluid than in the past.

How does one account for poverty? Schools are difficult to compare. My impression is that American schools are very local. I remember the Sidney Poitier film, "To Sir, with Love." It reminded me of Newark, NJ.

I know the American myths. We seem to envy the royals. There is a national addiction on rich, country estates in England with massive servants before WWI and WWII. We all feel we would be upstairs, not downstairs.

What do we compare? Appalachia vs. Oxford. I suspect each country's school systems serve its needs.

I won't even get into the discussion of which country produces the smartest people. I will say we have the best MMA fighters.

I find Americans are less historically and culturally aware than the Brits.

Regarding accents, the Brits have as many variations of accents as the the Yanks. Only a select few speak like the Queen.
