I realized when you tell people that you are an athiest they get hostile especially family members I feel like what is the big deal if someone does not believe in God. I think that they may feel that you life as a resuly is meaningless which is untrue.

The lack of belief in a "creator" means that you are no longer functioning within their comfortable parameters....
The possibility that you've seen something that they have not yet seen or grasped, tends to threaten people...
The possibility that you've spotted something that is false, about their viewpoint, and that they may eventually be required to abandon or reject a comforting "world-view", can REALLY upset many people...
I think these are some of the major reasons for such hostility against atheists...

You are absolutely correct--I've observed the same thing myself many times. And yet there are a lot of atheists that are hostile to people of any faith!
Why is that? Why is it that some people are hostile to others with differing beliefs, whatever they may be?
My take is that they feel threatened somehow or that something happened in their past that triggers angry, irrational behavior. Either way, it's not conducive to convincing anyone to consider an alternative point of view.

Believers should embrace atheists.. atheists should embrace believers.. the world would be a much happier place...
I'm a believer.. and I have wonderful atheist friends... they love me, I love them.. what's the problem?

What, have you forgotten about the "Crusades"??? The invasions of Europe by Muslim Turks??? The many wars between Protestants and Catholics??? The current conflicts between Israel and Muslim countries???
Trust me, Bubba, it's not the "atheists" that you need to complain about.... It's the other versions of worship of those Middle-Eastern gods that you adore...
Personally, it's the endless stream of "feel-good" blather that is TOTALLY disconnected from history, science and FACTS, that sets MY teeth on edge about most forms of religion...

Zid.. I'm talking about today, but as you mention it, I totally agree with you about the crusades. But that doesn't mean atheists and believers can't get along together today if they want. There is far more to life than that. As I said I love the atheist friends I have and they love me. It's not difficult.
