He was picked on and shot because George Zimmerman profiled him.
End of story.
frankly, i dont even care about the race issue, zimmerman killed a young boy, and in my opinion if its true that zimmerman was getting beat up, he could have shot him in the leg. once zimmerman has the gun pointed at martin, its check mate, and zimmerman had the situation under control. its in my opinion unacceptable to then execute martin.
The Fla law is silly. Police officers receive special training (and they screw up). Martin was not doing anything so imminently dangerous to anyone's safety that the police could not have responded.
Terry's list is good. The Martin's pr can also spin a convincing story. We have no idea what evidence exists and whether the state will bear its burden on proof. This became viral precisely b/c it is so typical.
I feel sorry for Zimmerman (out of his league) and Martin. It appears as tho it will come down as to credibility. There is documentation of what actually occurred. The laws regarding neighborhood watches and would be vigilantes need to be reined in. I grew up in such a neighborhood. Violence was always a concern. People find it strange but when I moved into Manhattan and walked down 42nd St. every day, I felt one million times safer.
I posted before that law enforcement is prob. the most pressing civil rights issue today. One should be safe wherever you live. We don't need volunteer policemen. When I had an unfortunate and very atypical incident in Manhattan with the police, I filed a complaint with the police commissioner. A very high ranking official called to apologize and calm me down. He said police are paramilitary. Whenever there is a war and people used to military fighting, the quality of the NYPD soars. When there is no war and there are fewer combat trained recruits, it dips.
It is a very sad story anyway you look at it. Personally, I feel Zimmerman was railroaded a bit prematurely. The media heightened the circus. Was he indicted for political or jurisprudential reasons. I don't know. Only a handful of people know tentative facts now. I am not one of them. If he weren't playing cop, Martin may not have panicked.
When I was younger, I was much like Zimmerman, eager to intervene and right wrongs. My parents' home and my NY neighborhood were literally saved by Guardian's Angels. I was told the price for police protection. Tiffany's has police protection. Why not me? As I am older, and assumed my own professional duties, I realized the expertise and training required. The situation was above Zimmerman's pay grade and expertise. We will never know whether racism was invovled.
If America had not such a despicable record in civil rights and police vigilanteeism, though, the story would not have been news. I think people were more upset about a very sick part of American culture in general than the specific situation. Zimmerman should not pay for past bad actors, however.
Oh, from my street days, give me hardened convicts in their 20s and 30s over teenagers anyday.
Since Trayvon thought Zimmerman was a mugger he most likely put up a pretty good fight.
Even if your getting the wrong end of a fight that doesn't justify you to pull out a gun and shooting the other person,
especially if the other person doesn't have a weapon of any kind.
The sad and unfortunate part to this story was that Trayvon was only two doors away from reaching his fathers house,
if Zimmerman had waited to see him enter the house, his suspicions would have dropped and he would have most likely walked
away thinking he made a mistake.
Suspicious Character?
I feel there will be no justice for Zimmerman, nor will there be any for Trayvon. They will be used as pawns by those who have an agenda. All the controversy swirling around the situation itself will be used for nefarious intents.
The stain left on both families will never come out, ever. Those left behind in the aftermath should need to be consoled , loved and their feelings preserved as they heal.
it is a sad thing to outlive your children.....
“doesn’t it make you feel a bit differently about Zimmerman?”
No, it doesn't. I never cared whether he was a black-hating Mexican (lot's of historical animosity between the two groups), or a Smurf-hating Gargamel.
I always saw him as a police officer wannabe, an overly aggressive mall cop...
And I'm glad he is getting tons of money to pay for his defense because if he is convicted, I don't want anyone whining that he wasn't able to mount a sufficient defense.
Zimmerman will get justice; he will get his day in court, represented by a capable attorney, and he will be able to tell his story and be judged by a jury of his peers. Trayvon will get the only justice that society can provide: trying his shooter.
But Justicia - does the evidence show that Zimmerman is really guilty of murder 2?
Would he have ever been charged this way without all the media attention?
I can see a case for manslaughter perhaps, or negligent homicide, but murder 2?
Racial profiling is bad- we need to be on the watch for maniacal Norwegians instead.
