Not seen one myself (at an assembly/KH), but maybe that's because I haven't attended since they were introduced (or maybe they haven't reached England yet...anyone know?). Frankly I think it's crass. It makes the WT look more like the business (not religion) it is. Gone is the widow's mite. As other posters have pointed out, it just encourages people to donate more (I think we've all paid for things on a card which we wouldn't pay for in cash, as psychologically, we're not parting with money).

But then, I think THIS is crass too (begging for money from 'worldlies')...

We've had them at our last few CAs and DCs.

Speaking from personal experience, I and most of my peers rarely carry any cash. As for writing a physical check, I probably write 1-2 a year, and whenever I have to it's only after a 15 minute hunt for the checkbook. So offering the option to use a card is simply more convenience than greed in my opinion.

I think the biggest reason it seems so much more garish is because with cash or a check, you can subtly slip it into a box (total time spent doing it: 2 seconds), whereas donating by card is much more of a production-- standing in line, swiping your card, entering the amount, entering your PIN, etc. It's pretty hard to be inconspicuous doing it that way. Plus they usually have someone standing there watching you do it, which makes it even more awkward.

Not that I actually ever donate anything anymore at the meetings, CAs, or DAs....

I can attest. I was at teh DC last year and I saw them for myself. I recall many years ago....an Awake magazine had an article (I think it was Watching the World) about how the Catholic Church was accepting credit card payments. Boy oh boy. Everyone from the rank and file to the CO had something to say about that. All of us condemned the church for its greed and failure to learn from Jesus' example of throwing the money changers and merchants out of the temple. Now.....10 years later......from the rank and file up to the CO.......all will LAUD the governing body for its swift and sensible decision to allow credit card donations. The hypocrisy is sickening

They are getting nothing out of me. Hopefully, all they get are chargebacks--particularly when people donate small amounts (under one toilet paper), then do the chargeback when they realize that the money is going to help pedophiles and silence the victims. Anyone that did the stupid thing of donating ought to call the bank and request a chargeback. That will cost the Washtowel plenty.
