@ FlyingHighNow: Oompa's comment is tactless because the implication is that the Columbine and Aurora massacres are connected.

He implied nothing. You are projecting your problems with media coverage onto Oompa. You are making an unfair, unfounded connection between what you heard in the media and an innocent observation that Oompa made. This is kind of ultra sensitive of you to read so much into Oompa's comments:

i was up when it happened east coast time...17 miles from columbine.....sick and sad..........oompa
fifty wounded...in a crowded theatre...sick sick soulthough.....i know some people are evil, but he could have been totally insane...i have no clue at this point so far

I daresay few remember that Columbine occurred in 1999.

You sure are speaking for a lot of people here. I remember exactly where I was and what was happening in my life at the time. My second husband was in the hospital recovering from quadruple bypass surgery. Columbine was the worst of the high school shooting/mass murders.

Like FlyingHighNow, I also remember where I was when the Columbine massacre happened and particularly the responsible way Governor Bill Owens handled it at the time. The governor refused to answer questions about gun control then, saying he was at the scene to give comfort and support to a horrified and stricken community. And yes, Oompa did temper his comment with remarking how tragic today's murders are. But I'm not being unfair to him nor am I "projecting" my spleen against the media onto him. There is no need or reason to mention both Columbine and Aurora together. "Ultra sensitive"? Say, rather, fully aware that these tragedies have marked differences which should be acknowledged in any comparison made.

FlyingHighNow and I are probably not going to concur on this point, and that's fine. We can agree to disagree. That's one of the purposes of this forum: to air differences and respect divergent points of view. What I have appreciated about our debate is the opportunity to discuss how this tragedy is being portrayed and its impact on us.

Quendi, I understand what you are trying to say. Here is another perspective. The first thing I thought of, after feeling the initial rush of shock and sadness, was to wonder how close Aurora is to Columbine. I'm sure I am not the only person who understands that this will open up fresh wounds for the families and victims of Columbine. To have a similar masacre happen within twenty miles, I'm sure, isn't going to do a lot to make them feel more secure. After years of healing, this will most certainly set a lot of people back some in their recovery and grief processes. It's perfectly natural for us to think of Columbine at a time like this. My dad lived in Colorado Springs for years. We passed the exit for Columbine on our way to Denver, the last time I visited him there. Now matter how far apart or random or coincidental, the fact is, these two shooting tragedies took place in close proximity and we out here know that will multiply the trauma to area residents. It multiplies the trauma to me.

But I'm not being unfair to him

You most certainly are. Of course people will mention Columbine. And Virginia Tech, and Norway etc. etc. etc. So? You are worried that by him mentioning Columbine, people may consider them in closer proximity than they are? Who gives a damn?

I took Oompa's comment to be sympathy for a region that has had more than it's share of tragedy.

Quendi why don't you shut the hell up. 12 people who loved their friends and family and were loved in return were murdered and your dumb ass gets bent out of shape over a simple comment from someone commenting on how sad it is. The next time you have a thought, go in the bathroom and stick your thumb up your ass. That's how the rest of us feel when you post on this forum.

    Prayers for all the victims.

What pisses me off is that I go to the Yahoo home page and what do I see, not a picture of families in support of each other, no!! I see a picture of the SOB that killed 12 people and injured many others. Why oh why do we put these peoples faces in "prominent light"... Sort of rewarding their horrible actions with popularity?

    Ugh!

It's definitely not CRAZY to suggest that it is interesting and noteworthy how close it is to Columbine. I don't know why anyone would object to such a posit.
