One of the interesting aspects of the Flood account is that it starts by mentioning the Nephlim, as if one of the goals of the Flood may be to wipe out all of those half-God/half-human bastards that were born after fallen angels corrupted the shapely daughters of men. But NOPE: God apparently forgot to patch that security vulnerability, as the account itself makes it clear nephilim existed BEFORE and AFTER the Flood. Whoops.... YHWH, better luck, next time!!
Interesting to consider that the claimed monotheistic shift of Judaism wasn't REALLY montheism, per se, but the pantheon of minor Gods were simply relegated to angel-status.... A rose by any other name.
An interesting angle few readers consider is that the Antediluvian World, as depicted in the Bible, is actually an anarchist's paradise, wherein God hadn't yet delegated the authority for man to govern other men! Remember, YWHW did that AFTER Noah emerged from the Flood, demanding that men hold each other accountable for spilled blood, whether of animals or man. So the implication of that act suggests that you literally could get away with murder, and no one could say boo, since might made right.
That possibly explains another motive behind God's rationale for the Flood: "evil in the hearts of men" led to widespread violence, and God could only blame himself, as God forgot to hand down laws for his creations (remember, the 10 commandments were still far off in the future). So rather than instituting code with Noah BEFORE the Flood, God decided just to hit the reset button and wipe out ALL mankind (and animal to boot: WHAT did they do wrong, again?). So the demiurge YHWH decided to "kill them all, and let Elohim sort them out".
Goofy story, all around....
PS Leo, "Gopher 3000"? Huh, I thought it was named "HMS Gopherwood". Maybe there's an issue with translation (I am using the KJV)?
Would there have been room for the people (many of them who were just eating, drinking, being merry, but taking no note) if they had a change of heart?
I think the answer is provided by pointing out the lack of dinosaurs today. Executive decisions had to be made by Noah, and human life is more worthy than dinos (which God knew were going to betray him in the future, anyway, by pointing to evolution and a much-older Planet than claimed).

Genesis 6:30-32 indicates that Noah spent most of his time working on the ark but still was able to devote 50 hours per month in the preaching work (today call Auxillary Pioneering).
I'm just wondering how hunter-gatherers were able to devote time to the most MASSIVE construction project to date, not having to struggle for survival, with leisure time to devote to ship-building? Not to mention, the lumberjack skills, framing, craftsmenship, etc. Noah must've been independently wealthy, indeed!
Then I remember that all such concerns are instantly dismissed with only three words: "God dun it!"
