Why was Simon Peter armed with a sword and other followers of Jesus?

What happen to turn the other cheek and love your

enemy. I am referring to the nite of Jesus arrest.(John 18;10)

How great of a swordsman one must be to cut a man

ear off without causing injury to the shoulder or head.

It seems odd to me that Jesus bodyguards are armed with

swords. And was Peter a gladiator before he became a

Christian, he was damn good with the sword.

According to the bible, god invented the sword. A horrid and deadly weapon.

according to Genesis a blade span to stop adam and eve entering eden again. So ignore the history books that say they arose in the Bronze Age (1600 BC) for god invented them, in fact his angels have them and use them.

So maybe that is why Peter and co had a sword.... They are HOLY killing devices. Nice.

Supposedly it was because they were in danger of attack from bandits. They didn't exactly have street lights and police patrols back in those days, so you were on your own in the dark.

As to Peter's sword skills, my guess is that he was aiming somewhere else with that sword and accidentally hit the slave's ear.

Good point raised, cut the ear and miss the shoulders, is he Chinese?! And if Peter did indeed pull such a stunt, I wonder how he got the liver to go to the Sanhedrin when he was at a high risk of being identified. My take: he either didn't do the sword thing or the denying thing, or didn't do neither! Sensational stuff

When I was a JW, I argued that if hoodlums were to attack a hall or assembly, we ought to fight back. Logic: Jesus used voilence when he claimed to be clearing his Father's name in the temple, so ain't we just "Christians"? Well, maybe even him could not practice what he preached!

    Interesting question.

I would assume that since the group coming to get Jesus was expecting resistance, they probably were wearing protective gear. Hence Peter and his swordsman skills only got the ear.

    just my 2 cents

    jam:

Back in the day this was brought up and it was said that there wild animals that a person back then could encounter if they were walking for long distances, so therefore a weapon would come in handy. Maybe they were all armed with small side-arms.

If you think about it, even now people on bikes can be attacked by mountain lions on trails!

My guess is with Cobalt - that Peter wasn't that great with a sword and did not have that great of aim.

Besides which, Christ rebuked him and healed the slave who was injured. So He gave no approval for that at all.

Snare, the bible was not written in real time. The sword guarding the way to the tree of life is symbolic (and used long after swords were already invented), not literal. The object of symbolism comes after the object is already invented and known.

The events in the Garden of Gethsemane and the commands of Jesus there teach the Apostles nonaggression, so Luke 22:36 does not permit violence. He said to Peter: "For all who draw the sword will die by the sword" (Matt. 26:52).

It is so funny to cut off an ear! I never saw the humor in it. Thanks.

Poor Pete. A sissy swordman. Well, Jesus made sure that the solider did not sue Peter. Oh,, it is so funny.

Why bother to fight at all if you aim for an ear? Also, why did not Jesus confiscate swords before that night since he knew all that would happen.
