Why was Simon Peter armed with a sword and other followers of Jesus?

I don't agree with the argument that Peter was a poor swordsman. He was probably average. From my reading, I take that having a sword was pretty typical, and I think it is likely that young people were taught how to use them. They had good roads and metropolitan areas, but it was still much more wild than what we understand today, and robbers and animals were still a problem. They didn't have lights, cameras, and cellphones or even protection of a vehicle, so while they were doing better with state enforcement of laws and protection, there were still very large holes that were filled by the average citizen. Just like today, we still have some holes and sometimes need to defend ourselves, but we have the advantage of well lit and travelled areas, cars to offer us a layer of protection and escape, and police who are a phone call away.

Why an ear? Well going on the assumption that the account is true, which I don't believe it is, this guard was certainly more trained than Peter, and would have his own maneuvers to deflect a blow. Seems like Peter was aiming for the head.

My other theory is that Peter wore a swords cuz the ladies thought it was sexy.

Why am I even answering? You really can't depend on me for things like this!

Peter had a BIG sword. That is why the word "peter" has come to mean "peter". He can cut you rear off with it.

I love the swords as sex statement angle.

I found out recently that Pilate was incredibly bad. He was so bad that the Romans recalled him for excessive cruelty. The gospels paint him kindly. Perhaps to impress Romans.

at dear Tams (peace to you... and you beat me to it - LOLOL!)... and a huge kudos to dear NC (for at least trying - LOLOL! Peace to you, as well... and you are not very far off in your POV!).

Glandular... please... cut it out? I'm asking you... for YOUR benefit. 'Cause hear tell Simon and Angh are on a bit of a warpath these days (and rightly so), and I would HATE to see you become a casualty of your own wit. Otherwise, I'm gonna have to join everyone else... and just resort to ignoring you. And I don't get the impression from your comments that that's really what you want.

    Anyway, good contributions, ladies!

    Peace!

Lets be honest....in reality... Its a story to propagate positive features in the character of Jesus. It doesnt make sense, he stuck his ear back on in order to return to heaven to judge him and send him to hell....

in case you missed the point, i know there are real people alive today, such as a lovely old lady who would be offended at the slicing off of another persons ear , even slicing off an ear of a bad person, even someone threatening her personally. These kind of people exist! But then it doesn't add up if you are then told... But the same sweet old lady will judge and extinguish the majority of all living people that has ever existed and put them in a lake of fire. The two personalities dont match... But in fiction it makes sense, the reader is supposed to see great mercy and great justice. In a real human it would appear as bipolar or schizophrenia.

Well THAT doesn't make sense ;)

    Perhaps you should reevaluate.

    The two personalities dont match...

Correct. So perhaps you are not seeing clearly, Snare?

    A) Christ does not send anyone to hell. There is no such place, certainly not in the context that i believe you are thinking.

The lake of fire is the second death. This death is eternal. There is no torture and suffering that is eternal, despite what many teach and interpret.

    B) What in the world makes you think that Christ had judged the man whose ear was sliced off, in the first place?

NC, I think you gave a good evaluation of the times up there.

    Peace all,

Interesting, isn't it, dear tec (peace to you, dear one!), how many have left religion/the WTBTS... and yet, still believe Christ judges? What, though, of HIS words that he judges no one... came to judge no man, etc.? It saddens me how many still adhere to religion's teachings, while claiming to have shaken all of that off entirely. I wish they would at least condescend to go back RE-read what they THINK they [thought] Christ said/did. I think they would be very surprised at what they read NOW - with different "eyes." I know many were/are... including me.

So many times I have read passages with others and observed how they included/excluded words, skipped over entire phrases, etc. So I always ask the one reading to do so OUT LOUD, so that perhaps they can HEAR what they are "reading" in their minds (or I can and ask them to re-read it). So many times, they go, "Wait! It DOESN'T say that, does it? It says...!" And then all of a sudden they have entirely new understanding.

Some use this "awakening" to support their assertion that the Bible is God's "Word" ("God's word is alive!") - they believe the change in their understanding proves that the Bible is a "living" document. That is not the TRUTH, though - the Bible isn't a "living" anything. The wood it's pages are made from is dead. The animal that produced the leather its covers are often made from are dead. The bugs, etc., that produce the ink... are dead. Ground to a paste. The gold that is often used to emboss its covers and line its edges was never a living thing. Thus, there is NO LIFE... in a bible.

The LIFE... is in us, even if only minimally... and it is our UNDERSTANDING that changes... based on our openess TO change... and not the words of the Bible (that changes). The words ALWAYS stated what they did. They did not miraculously switch around, or appear/disappear... to change the meaning of what was stated. It's a BOOK. It is because of [the change in] US, then... and not the Bible... that the change in what we SEE "in the Bible" occurs. And for some of us, how CLEAR we see... is because of Christ.

For most, a lot of what is believed to be "in the Bible"... or that God/Christ did/said... is based on what such ones were TAUGHT is in there, they did/said. Taught by others who purport to know... but truly do not... or do but are teaching different from what they know is in there. For example, that Judas WAS at the last meal... AND partook. The WTBTS knows he was... but won't bring themselves to ADMIT that. A lot of folks' understand is based on what others purported to be in there... that isn't. Or vice versa, that they say isn't... but is. I personally wish people would stop "parroting" what they were taught... and really look things up for themselves. If, that, is, they can't yet go to the One about Whom these things "speak" and learn the truth directly from him.

Saying that Christ judges, though... is pure ignorance. Yes, he has been GIVEN the power of judging. Indeed, ALL authority has been given him, in the spirit AND physical realms. And he will grant that power to others. But he never USES that power... and because of HIS "pattern"... neither do those he grants it to! Rather, he... and so, like him, they... go FORGIVING... and RELEASING! THAT... is part of the GOOD news.

THAT is the DIFFERENCE... between the "Old" Law/Covenant... and the "NEW" Law/Covenant.

    And... it's in the Bible.

Again, peace to you... and thanks for the great segue! LOLOL!

Hold on there just a goddam minute. First of all, are you the "AGuest" who, 3 months ago sent me an unsolicited loonng, PM full of your strange religious ramblings? You also said you were starting your own website to gather others of your mental disorder and would not be posting on JWN much longer.

If Simon or Angh are on a "warpath" maybe they should check out looneys who are trying to set up their own church or whatever it is you are obsessed with.

Hold on there just a goddam minute.

Well, now, gosh, dear G (peace! Really!)... no need to cuss, really! LOLOLOL!

First of all, are you the "AGuest" who, 3 months ago sent me an unsolicited loonng, PM full of your strange religious ramblings?

Well, I didn't think my ramblings were strange (you might disagree, though, so, okay)... and they certainly weren't religious (really, they weren't!), but, yeah, that was me. I mean, I think it was. I'd have to see the PM to be able to say fo' sho'...

You also said you were starting your own website to gather others of your mental disorder and would not be posting on JWN much longer.

I certainly didn't say the first part... and I'm not sure I said exactly the second part. But, yeah, my intent was to be done with this place. I've changed my mind... and my heart... though. I'm a woman, though, so it's not only my prerogative... but kind of a right. Right?

If Simon or Angh are on a "warpath" maybe they should check out looneys who are trying to set up their own church or whatever it is you are obsessed with.

Maybe. That's THEIR prerogative and right, though, so...

Look, all's I'm sayin' is that if you're gonna follow certain folks around the board... even folks you consider "looney"... consider not soiling the thread of serious posters with immature snark. I didn't start this thread and so you're not necessarily disrespecting me (although perhaps that's your intent), but the OP. Now, others don't seem to give you much regard at all, but I thought I would at least acknowledge that I DO see you... and ask you to cut it out.

I'm still asking. If you can receive that, of course. If not, then... again, I have no problem joining all the others who're ignoring you, too.

    Capiche?

    Again, peace to you!

    A slave of Christ,
