Old time JW's did some very devout JW's refuse to eat pizza with pepperroni because they believed "blood" was in the pepperroni?

Yes, there was also the blood in chocolate fiasco sending panic in the camps. I don't know how many letters the chocolate companies received on the subject from enquiring minds. Fortunately, it didn't last for long. (The chocolate bars in question did have 'plasma' listed in the ingredients.)

And yes to the red specks in eggs being off limits, religiously checking all the ingredients on processed foods, and avoiding anything containing the famous red beetle blood - actually falling for the idea that beetles have blood - how gullible can you get!

Oh, and did anyone do this : go out to fancy(ish) restaurants and ask the waiter to go check if the duck had been bled so you would know if you could order it or not ?

    Wow this takes me back.

I remember a certain sister who used to write to manufacturers to see if the red food colouring (cochineal) was synthetic or made from "crushed up beetles".

There was a bit of a craze for a certain liquid tonic in the 80s as well (Jws are always tired) until a rumour went round that the reason it was so effective was that it contained blood.

One brother wouldn't eat chicken flavoured crisps or noodles in case 'the chicken hadn't been bled'.

And I remember the Ox blood in wine scare. How sacreligious it would be if the wine that represented the blood was made with blood! Truely the devil gets in everywhere.

Anything with pink or red colouring was suspect.

Yes, red and pink candy was definitely off limits if you bought into the "beetle blood" idea.

I also love remembering how as a child I was told the blood that comes out of meat as it's cooked isn't blood, it's just 'juices'.
