Which shows why the word atheist is such a vacuous one.

An atheist is just someone who doesn't believe. Atheism, is there is such a thing, is not a religion or political movement.
I find militant or agressive Christianity or religiosity just as sickening as militant atheism. Angry Christians are on an equal level in my view as an angry atheist. Or perhaps they are a bit worse since they are claiming to represent God.
TBH CA - I find militant anything distasteful!

Cofty, the same applies in the other direction, I think.
Take this statement as an example of vacuous thinking:
Religion somehow thinks that if it is not given political power, it is being suppressed.
Now how does that sound to a believer like myself?
Replace "religion" with "atheism," and tell me how it sounds to you.
The one thing that every ideology has in common, whether religious or not: Humans.
Is it fair to observe though that atheism is a negative or passive description? I have practically nothing in common with lots of atheists.
People of faith do share a common thread of thinking that their opinions on big issues are reflections of a god. That's a big difference.

You address trappings, Cofty. What is bare atheism with no trappings? You say it is a vacuous description. The same is true of its opposite.
The difference being that an atheistic government would try to suppress all religions and promote atheism - which in fact the Russian and Chinese communists did. My point still stands that the only significant and "atheistic" governments have proven to be at great fault on human rights issues.
Nobody in this thread is claiming an atheist government suppressing freedom of religion is a good idea, therefore your assertion about atheistic communism and human rights abuses is a strawman.
Whilst 30%+ of adults in the USA belief in young earth Creationism we need angry atheists to prevent their 'lack of reason' undermining progress for the rest of us. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitzmiller_v._Dover_Area_School_District)
PS, you make a great point. It is the human element. As long as there are humans, they will use whatever they have at their disposal to gain power and lord it over others. Be it atheist or theist. I'm not for anybody imposing their beliefs (or lack of) on anybody else.
