Read the book several times; somehow avoided seeing any musical stage shows though it has toured through this area several times and been well attended.
I saw The Hobbit in 3D IMAX and liked it and look forward to the 2nd installment this year. Only spent $10.50...I go on Sunday mornings.
Musicals are tricky. Just one character/actor that sings off can sour the whole thing. Many Broadway shows that are successful don't make it to the big screen.

The other singers more than make up for Russell Crowe's poor performance.

I went with my teenager and we loved it. Mind you, I think the live production was better and they could've cut at least half-hour from the film w/o hurting it. I thought Russell Crowe's singing was excellent and though Hugh Jackman did a good job of Jean Valjean, he couldn't sing to save his soul. The orgiastic melange of sentimental Catholicism and libertine ideology with which the movie ended was a bit much, but I still enjoyed it.

My wife's two favorite DVDs are the 25th anniversary musical of Les Miserables in concert "the O2", and the movie with Liam Neeson as Jean Valijean, but she still cried uncontrollably at this latest version of the movie.
I'm a sucker for the underdog, redemption and social justice so I loved it also, the singing got better towards the revolution part of the movie.

THE MOVIE,.. oh, okay, I thought that this was a thread about the recent DC,.. I get it now.
No I like the one with Liam Neeson and prefer my music to not snap me back into the reality that I was just invlolved in watching a movie. I mean did people back then just break out into a song?
The last time a song snapped be back into reality I was attending a DC.

My favorite version is the 10th Anniversary Dream Cast...I own the DVD and know it like an old friend... Can't watch any other version...
Until now! The movie was totally different (and the same?), but I LOVED IT. They brought my beloved musical to life.
Bravo!!
And I was so happy to see Colm Wilkinson as the Bishop.
