I'm not sure how much we can help this person.

Meow posted shortly after (s)he started studying, you guys explained how the beliefs were wrong then, yet meow has obviously continued to study.

    Meow,
In my case, I wish I would have diligently studied the beliefs of my Church, as I did those of the Watchtower Society. Had I done so I would have saved me years of confusion and turmoil. And I ended up back in the same Church I had left!

    Don't forget the important question.

What's the sign of a false prophet?

    Answer.... One false prophecy.

    >For the most, Jehovah's Witnesses are among the nicest people you meet. <

Right here and right now, I will tell you this is not true, with all due respect to the person who said this.

Ted Bundy, executed for multiple murders, volunteered for a couple of years on a suicide hot line.

John Wayne Gacey, executed for multiple murders (bodies found under his house)volunteered to entertain children for years.

    This is NOT NICE PEOPLE.

Ask these JW NICE PEOPLE why, since 1965 at least, JW's have practiced the expulsion and shunning of rape victims. Ask them why they practice the expulsion and shunning of CHILDREN. Ask them why they practice the expulsion and shunning of battered wives and children. (As of at least 1998)

If this poster meant that JW's present a 'pleasant disposition', I agree..they will present it for about 5 minutes untill you start asking hard questions like this. Then they do what YOUdon'tKNOW did...change the subject, resort to name-calling and try to discuss something else. Just like Satan their father.

And while you're about it, ask why the number of partakers is RISING....(as of 2001) and also why do they have zero/negative growth in 75 countries...oh you won't be able to becasue they are going...going...gone.

: I haven't seen any of this and I'm searching for opinions.......

And you probably won't see any of that until you get baptized. Then it will be too late.

What Cult acts like a Cult in front of prospective recruits not yet fully initiated? Think about it.

Dear Dungbeetle (there are two words I'd never thought I'd use together!),

You are correct in that I meant it in a "pleasant disposition" kind of way. On the surface, Witnesses truly are kind people. They try hard to be so. But they will be kind to you only as long as it serves them. If you decide not to join the organization, they'll drop you just like that.

It is unfair to the argument, though, to drop names of extreme cases as if they represent the organization. That's akin to holding up the terrorists of September 11 as an example of Islamic beliefs. It's just unfair. They did wrong, yes, but they are not the typical Witnesses.

As a collective, and on a deeper level, Witnesses are not nice. As I mentioned, once you start leaving the fold, you're dumped. If you leave the organization, they'll completely ignore you, even dispensing with greetings and -- as in the case of a friend -- even thank-yous and you're-welcomes. They are very, very judgmental people, and incredibly holier-than-thou.

(By the way, Dungbeetle, thanks for your civility. Makes things so much easier.)

I like what JBean and others have to say. Study with the Witnesses to your heart's content. Ask the Witnesses these hard questions. I encourage all my neighbors to talk with the Witnesses, ask them questions, look closely at the literature that the Witnesses give them.

Make a list of all their doctirnal flip-flops and ask to look them up in their library, becasue you want to see for yourself IN THE REAL LITERATURE.

Many JW's have completely given up on 'converting' anyone to their religion. They bide their time and make do with 'putting in their hours'. Like YOUKNOW and FREDHALL and YADIRF--just putting in the hours, getting their posting numbers up, with no pretense of substance.

Anyone studying with the JW's become a statistic no matter what. xxx books, xxx magazines, xxx hours, xxx attendance at the meeting, Memorial, and conventions--all of which end up in the yearbooks--from the beginning of association with the Watchtower one loses their humanity and becomes another number.

People that leave--either walkaways, runaways, throwaways, or death--don't count for much by the Watchtower. Well, they count for something with US here on this board. The list of names of those who did not survive the Watchtower grows horrendously longer day by day.

    We will not forget.

    Meow,
The JW religion is dark so you'll need to use a good light.

Their own words are easy to use against them. Christ instructed followers to make up their mind not to work out what to say ahead of time - it's good advice.

See what Youknow has just offered.
" If any man teaches other doctrine and does not assent to healthful words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, nor to the teaching that accords with godly devotion, he is puffed up with pride not understanding anything, but being mentally diseased over questionings and debates about words. From these things spring envy, strife, abusive speeches, wicked suspicions, violent disputes about trifles on the part of men corrupted in mind and despoiled of the truth."

Healthful words. Do you think Jesus thinks you're mentally diseased if you asked questions? Perhaps their god does.
In other bibles you'll find that Paul referred to an unhealthy interest.
Read carefully and Take a Healthy interest, i.e. Know and realise when it's meaningless to the matter at hand, but Don't NOT Ask Questions.

That's the type of thing that holds the cult together - the distortions of truth are the glue of the doctrines - take away the subtle deceptions and the whole thing falls apart. So use a good light because "the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the LORD God had made".

    And as for

The demons know that it is much harder to entrap those who have years of experince in dealing with the matters of the spirit.
Who can deny that it's much harder to talk to someone who is trained to avoid hearing and SEReriously convinced that God will take EVerything away from them if they do listen to anything else. As for demons, they seem to be attacked by many of them.

You'll come to realise who you're with when you hear the "speaking for God" classic loving lines like, "From Jehovah's standpoint they are mere unreasoning animalistic beasts"

Though you'll know, we'd like you to know beforehand - it hurts to see that sort of thing done to unsuspecting people's lives.

Thank you, so much, for all your responses. Unfortuneatly, I'm even more confused now!

YouKnow- what is your response to Jeromes list of "what they tell you" and what they don't? I'm also confused because you seem to defend the JW's, but you also seem to not support their beliefs. Are you currently baptized, etc? Bottom line, where do you stand on the issues?

Am I suppossed to have two different Bible translations handy at all times to double check the JW's vs. everyone else? How do we know which translation is really correct? Is the Diaglott reliable?
