Before 1914 they thought the Napoleonic Wars signified the start of the end times.
Exactly, and they didn't start to change that until the 1930s, with a full explanation in 1943.

As was asked, 1914 is marked how?
WWI?
There were world wars before WWI.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Years%27_War
There were wars that were just as deadly, if not deadlier, prior to WWI.

What about in terms of famines and pestilences? The 20 th century saw vast improvements in these areas.
WWI was not an unexpected war, a "bolt out of the blue"…it had been seen coming for decades. And WWI did not interrupt some fabled period of peace either.

So again, 1914 is marked how?
Lowest estimates From WWI is 15,000,000
Lowest estimates from WWII is 40,000,000
Wonder which one was more significant in term of death results.

The WTS were lucky that WWI started in 1914. There were signs it was coming anyway and secular authorities had written about the risks of the social conditions in Europe.
As has been pointed out, there have been plenty of significant events previous and since then but I agree it is pretty much impossible to convince a hard core dub that 1914 did not mark the beginning of pangs of distress.
It's a difficult book to come by, but I recommend reading The Sign of the Last Days, When? by By Carl Olof Jonsson.
1914 was a landmark year because the WTS. wanted and needed it to be a landmark year to commercialize and market its products.
They even used 360 days a year instead of 365 1/4 days .
Exploiting the naive and ignorant is what the WTS. does and always has done.
Exploiting the first world war fit into that marketing agenda so they used that as well.
There were many doomsday religions latching on to John Aquila Brown's in the 1870s.
On thing thay had in common was that that they were all throwing darts at a calendar in their futile attempts to predict Armageddon... Some were saying 1912, others were saying 1913, 1917, etc...
The ones that came "close" to the bulls eye were the Bible Students... They hit October 1914 (instead on July 1914... the start of WWII)... but keep in mind that the prediction was for Armageddon to arrive in 1914 (not a World War)...
Also, they were teaching that Jesus had taken the throne in 1874 (and didn't change it to 1914 until the late 20's)...
But the Watchtower has managed to put their spin on these events knowing all too well that most Dubs will simply believe them and not make any effort to investigate the facts...
Awaking look up 606 b.c.e that was the true date held by jws until the 40s when they found out whoops there is no zero year and simple moved Jerusalems destruction to 607 so 1914 date still held true. Add 606 plus 1914 you get 2520 dumb asses didnt know our calendar went from 1bce to 1ad. People have written whole articles on this.
They just got lucky!
Just imagine if WW1 hadn't started in 1914 there would probably be no JWs today.
AnnOMally the "age of terrorism" hardly started in 2001. The Birtish and Americans have been terrorising the world for a long long time, it simply visited their own soil in 2001.
