Not strictly true. The epic was first written down between the 8th and 11th centuries by a Christian monk. Before that it had been an oral tradition passed down for many generations before the advent of Christianity. Its peculiar double-meter rhythm in each line was an aid to memorize the story. It may even predate the time Jesus was supposed to have lived. Seamus Heaney's modern translation is considered to be one of the best.
