Before that it had been an oral tradition passed down for many generations before the advent of Christianity. Its peculiar double-meter rhythm in each line was an aid to memorize the story.   I spent 6 years getting two degrees in English literature. I didn't need to reference the Internet for information about Beowulf. If you're not getting respect, it's because you aren't earning it.

  I think it is funny when people claim their academic qualifications make their opinions so much more valuable than the autodidacts on here, it ain't so, most of the real wisdom on here comes from the humble, often self taught.
