Yes, interesting that the stuff of goatherders is studied at colleges and universities. Hundreds and thousands of books and articles are written on a variety of subjects, connected to what they have written. Shows you how ignorant man is.

The ancients were so wise. When a man who was WAY smarter than all YOU GUYS give them credit for, just couldn't help himself and raped the girl he saw in town, it was decreed so very wisely that he should....... MARRY HER!!! Happy day for her. Plus he had to pay her dad 250 bucks. Of course she needed to have screamed loud enough in the city to be heard or else she was punished for being raped and not fighting hard enough. The ancients had beards, and robes, and could talk to each other. Even talk to kings! In palaces! They even bought and sold stuff and sailed ships. Just be careful lest the wise ancient be horny. Then his goat herder roots took over.

We need to be sensible about our attitudes to ancient texts and writers. For a start the Bible writers were an Eclectic group, coming from many backgrounds and living in very different periods of man's existence.

One thing is evident, they knew nothing beyond, or above if you like, the General Knowledge of their day, and often they were ignorant of knowledge that was available in other cultures. They were often not just ignorant by today's standards.

If you are a rationalist/realist you do not "believe" in scientific discoveries, you see the evidence, solid and tested, the wealth of data and facts and experimentsthat make up scientific proof.

Belief is trusting that something is true without proof.

There is nothing that proves the Bible to be anything more than a collection of writings from many centuries which cannot be used for anything more valuable than gaining an appreciation of the time and place in which they were written, and the theological evolution that took place amongst the Jews, which though an interesting study, is simply that.

Comatose, be thankful for those warmongering pillagers and rapists of days gone by. Without them and their contribution, we might not have been here. At least we know many of them could read and write. Actually they invented alphabetical writing, grammar, and linguistics. Here's a few of their ramblings:

He is stretching out the north over the empty place, Hanging the earth upon nothing; (Job 26:7 NWT)

He has described a circle upon the face of the waters, To where light ends in darkness. (Job 26:10 NWT)

As for the earth, out of it food goes forth; But underneath it, it has been upturned as if by fire. (Job 28:5 NWT)

All the winter torrents are going forth to the sea, yet the sea itself is not full. To the place where the winter torrents are going forth, there they are returning so as to go forth. (Ecc 1:7 NWT)

Not bad for a lot of ignoramuses and goatherders.

Need for transportation is a virtue when you peddle cars.

Bordom is a virtue when you peddle in entertainment.

Unquestioning faith is a virtue when you peddle in bullshit.

So.. perhaps not so "ignorant". They were very successful at peddling bullshit. Even if they couldn't peddle their used goats.

In Job38v4 God asks: "Where did you happen to be when I founded the earth?"

He goes on in verse 6 "Into what have its socket pedestals been laid down, or who laid its cornerstone?"

Now this inaccurate view of the earth as a building will be claimed, rightly, as speaking metaphorically or poetically, but is that not true with the other seemingingly accurate "scientific" statements ?

The ignorance of the Bible writers is easy to demonstrate, ignorance of contempory facts not yet learned in their culture, but facts none the less.

Hardly evidence of inspiration by a Creator.

The ancient city of Ur of the Chaldees was apparently a very advanced civilisation, they even had central heating.

The Romans, wow, they brought a lot of advancements and improvements.

as they say .... ''necessity is the mother of all invention''

Phizzy, the Bible is not a scientific textbook or history book and has never claimed to be so.

applehippie is of course correct about the ancients. They were far better than modern humans at such enlightened behaviours as Divinely-ordered genocide, systematic subjugation of women and enslaving fellow humans on the basis of accidents of birth.

The ancients were peerless in their devotion to a "god" who demanded exclusive devotion and specialized in ordering "His" people to carry out acts of butchery against those who occupied land "He" wanted for "His"people.
