I dont intend to be as tolerant of people being disruptive as I once was.
I agree. You should crack down with great authority. (it was said in jest, Simon...)

I remember writing threads that got 10,000 views within a couple of days, maybe five years ago or so. That never happens any more.
minimus,
Maybe it is slower. It FEELS that way to me.
Also, maybe there is a harder edge to the board--again, It FEELS that way.
I miss snowbird and burntheships, shamus et all, and there is not as much searching dialogue for those of us who have faith in a supernaturual goodness that Jesus channeled. (There, did I say that with enough PC to allow my idea to have a moment to be heard?) Respondents tend toward derision, if not superiority. Understandable in so many ways--so very un-christian ;-)
Don't get me wrong, the board has been a vast benefit to me in backing up to review my faith. I need to do that.
But, it may be a hard place for some to convalesce from the spiritual abuse at the hands of the JW handlers. Perhaps that creates some loss. If so, that is not good.

The pace is still dizzying for someone like me who visits about once/day and hardly ever on weekends. I find myself trying to catch up, and I have to pass on what are probably many worthwhile threads.
There are some things I'd love to see from the new site:
1. A type of "Like" function. As much as I hate to mimic a Facebook idea, there are a lot of really good posts that I cannot quote, especially on threads that run several pages. It would be great to let the writer of an excellent post that you appreciate their effort.
2. A User Control Panel.
3. A Thread Preview, whereby pointing the mouse to a thread topic opens a brief preview of the thread. This would help users (like me) to narrow down, to some extent, the threads that they will find worthwhile and interesting.
A year ago we were enjoying the self-inflicted wound that was the "Summer Of Sparlock". YouTube postings, WTS frantically getting them taken down, dubbies in denial claiming it was fake, 4Chan putting the boot in, parody videos etc. It was fun, and it had the board buzzing.
This year doesn't have the same level of dubbish dumbassery. The convention releases work better than valium, and there's nothing to hold up as ridiculous. True, the July WT helps raise the BS quotient, but it's probably too convoluted for many dubs to understand all of it's implications, and it lacks the instant "grab factor" of the little purple plastic fella.
Basically, this year they're just trying to bore us into submission.
Everything under the sun has already been covered.

I agree. The intention is to enable people to provide feedback on what is good and bad content so that we can 'surface' the best stuff without moderating being so necessary (to demote the bad)
2. A User Control Panel.
I prefer building in ccontrols into the UI but there will definitely be a profile page for preferences and such.

Have a look at the .com site - there are snippets which are supposed to be the most representative few sentances from the post. This is very subjective though and will likely need tuning. You can turn the display of these snippets on or off (button) and they should appear when you mouseover a title.
Topics can be viewed by date updates (like active topics) or date started / posted or by the number of posts. This can be done across the entire site or down into any individual section. The paging should be faster and eventually I hope to enable some filtering and other goodies such as sorting by highest rates (from #1). This can then provide things like 'top topics in the last 7 days'.
The text analysis also enables similar topics to be displayed which helps when reading about a subject and the intention is to update this as you're typing a new topic so it can be "are you sure? there are already 28 topics in the last 10 minutes telling us Michael Jackson has died ... do you really want to start another?'
Finally, the topic lists auto-update if you're not moused over them with a cool animation (done with polling every 30+ seconds right now but eventually it will be pushed to anyone viewing the updated pages).
the new site looks good--no doubt many active dubs will blunder in to it.
Could it be many are healing from the wounds of being a JW and are moving on? Or has people lives not changed one bit since they left the WT cult and all the talking just does not help them? When I first came on this site I was a scared bitter soon to be Ex JW. What I thought the function of this site was at that time was to help me express my views so I could work out my emotional needs helping me getting out of the cult. That's why I was here and I am sure everybody else came here for the same or diffrent reasons. Compare to you guys I am still the new guy on the block. And I have seen many changes on this board. Some good others bad. Sspo is most likely right on what he said. For myself when I post I don't go very deep into what I think or feel. I try to keep it light. Except when I really have a tryng situation taking place in my life. I for myself don't like in your face debate. I guess it is because of all the years of going door to door. So sometimes I shy away from it. Slimboyfat I don't ever remember the time I been on were a post got 10,000 replys. That must of been something. In the last serveral months there have been many new ones coming on. And I know how they feel coming onto this board for the first time. They are just testing the water now. Hopefully as time passes they will be more assertive on this fourm. Anyway thanks Simon for letting me come on here and thanks to everyone else for listening to my bull crap. LOL Totally ADD
I go for Quality over quantity any day.
no interest in 'fluffy crap' got a real life for all that. Like to come here and have, read, intelligent discussions.
don't think this site should carry the label of 'apostate', deters jw's and give the WT more power over them.
would love a 'like' button, they even have them on newspapers forums.
Hate wasting my posts on giving thumbs up and brief words of support for those that need encouragemnet to build their confidence.
( but it has to be done)
Simon - have sent you a pm.
