Is that what they always believed?-fraz

JWs have always always had changes in what they believed. In 1914 as bible students they believed they were all annointed and going to heaven and loads left the organisation. The JW at work will know this. JWfacts.com shows all the changes in beliefs dating baqck from Russell to Rutherford. Asking him about changes in beliefs and new light is also a good strategy.

They were inspected in 1918/1919 and found to be doing Gods will, but at that time many of the doctrine was different to what it is now. The JW at work will not know all of this but he will know that until 1926 they celebrated Xmas at Bethel.

Have fun with your next chat with him

What Kate said. But yes, it's been the teaching for a long while now. How did Jesus appoint them from heaven? Well, that part's not so far-fetched. I mean, he's a spirit creature, he doesn't need to physically be down here, or ruling over the world actively, in order to observe or appoint someone. The issue is, as Kate says, that when they were appointed as the slave, they still smoked, used the cross, celebrated Christmas, believed that all of them were going to heaven, etc. It was a different religion.

according to them , jesus is only interested in working with his remnant , I think it's clear that the remnant disappeared from the death of the last apostle til modern day , clearly the catholics and protestants don't qualify but the question is, who is teaching the truth today that may qualify ? The WTBTS insists it is them but they are constantly changing the beliefs under the new light dogma , if something is wrong even if you believe it right , that's not coming from jesus and is false .

Apognophus: 'How did Jesus appoint them from heaven? Well, that part's not so far-fetched. Having never been a Witness this is the bit I don't get. How did the organisation know they had been appointed? AS far as I can tell the GB simpoly asserts that they were appointed without any details around the circumstances of the appointment. How do they get away with this?

Re frazzled UBM , the Society doesn't need to defend it's position , any more than the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un needs to defend his divine appointment as the Dear Leader ( or whatever his title is. ) They just assert it , and if anyone disagrees or questions it then they get disfellowshipped (JW) or thrown into a concentration camp together with all their family (North Korea). At least in bible times you had to raise people from the dead or heal a few sick people or show other similar evidence of divine backing. Nowadays the hurdle is a bit lower and divine appointments are quite useful in that there isn't any real need to show any proof and if you can convince enough people and threaten any dissenters then then you literally have a job for life , and if you play your cards right , plenty of women and Rolls Royces as well.

Re where is Jesus , I think the WTBTS official position is that he is kind of hanging around in the vicinity of the earth waiting for Jehovah to give the OK for Armageddon to come and kill 99.9% of the earths population. A bit like Banquo's ghost hovering around in the background ready to spoil a party. In the meantime he is "actively" directing the preaching work. But they seem a bit vague on his ( never "His" with the WTBTS ) actual details or location.

But in fairness Jesus has always been something of a marginal figure with the WTBTS - it's really all about the Organisation first. He used to get a lot of emphasis in Russels time but since he came in 1918 or 1919 and appointed the society as the Faithful Slave , he's been pushed very much to a back role. Other than at Memorial times , he is largely forgotten about , other than as "an example" to witnesses ( well , in his preaching rather than anything else he did. ) We used to have an old ex-Catholic sister in our congregation who occasionally would give answers in the Watchtower about how much she loved Jesus & she was regarded as a bit of a fruitcake , a bit of an embarrassment - cough , move on to the next answer please. I guess that pretty much sums up Jesus's role as far as the WTBTS is concerned.

dozy - interesting - I put this view of Jesus to my Witness colleague who thinks he is getting me to study, but he refuted by saying Jesus was very important and that the GB are under Jesus' authority to direct the preaching work on Earth.

I sent you a private message Frazzled. Don't forget - in short - most JWs couldn't care less about doctrine - they just blindly spoon feed what the WTBTS tells them - so question marks about what Jesus has been doing for the last 100 years or why God decided to appoint a ragtag group of a few thousand people with some crazy beliefs from Pittsburg in 1918 as his sole earthly representatives doesn't occur to them. There have been about 6 different views on the "generation" in the last 20 years , ranging from identifying them as the "wicked" to the "anointed" and every single one has been accepted without question.

    @ Frazzled UBM....

Your observation is correct, but it must be remembered that what JWs say they believe often differs with what's in writing; or, what's in writing is not what occurs in practice. Test this by talking to a JW only about Jesus, but don't mention Jehovah or "The Organization", and watch how uncomfortable they get.

To illustrate, look at the WT artwork below- JWs say Jesus is the key part of the Organization...but if true, why is he not pictured in the Organizational arrangement????? It goes directly from Jehovah to the Governing Body-

    .

In reality, to a JW, Jêsus is the guy from Tijuana who mows their lawn every other Thursday.
