Well, it makes financial sense, if it's true. If you are a contractor and you don't own a tool, let's say a jack-hammer, then you have to rent one. If you save some money, you can eventually buy your own and cut out the rental company. Then you pass the cost of the Jack-hammer to the customers.
The WTBTS may have had a grand plan to have ASS halls all through the various circuits [ I am in the US.] but they may not be able to financially swing it because of their pedo cases and whatever else is going on. They can have shorter, Regional Conventions. They friends won't complain as much about 1 day instead of 3. They won't complain about having to travel to an Ass Hall and stay at a hotel either, if it's just one day. Hell, it will be a regular JW vacation!!
The WTBTS can still rake in the cash for the Ass Halls that were built with free labor. That cash can build a few more Ass Halls in time, if they are needed. The O'l celestial chariot is zig-zagging all over the place these days...evidence of JEEHOOBER's blessing!!!

Regional conventions will be held at Circuit Assembly Halls! not confirmed about the one day only schedule yet but I don't see how they could fit all the assemblies in if the went 2 days

i imagine there will be the option to have a 30 hour pioneer month for the month of your RC and there will be a "special week of activity" for field service the week of the RC also
this will be spun just like the cancelling of the book study, not about money or lack of brothers, but about speding time as a family and in service

What will be the differenc then between a one day and a regional ? most Assy. Halls have a maximum permitted attendance, so surely the size of both will be similar ? I am confused. (I am old).

One day regional conventions, and (I'd bet) half or more of the talks originating from Bethel, or even videotaped & replayed. Only the loyalest of braindead company men would have the "privilege" of giving a talk in person.

i suspect they will have streamed talks from the GB and bethel at the RC's to make them seem "special" over the CA's.
possibly have different geographical boundaries to change up the attendees for an added sense of "specialness"

How things can changed....for decades they scolded us for missing meetings saying "Do not forsake the gathering of yourselves but do it all the more so as you behold the day drawing near" Hebrews 10:25
So instead of increasing the meetings or gatherings, deep in the time of the endd, they've reduced them.
1. No more book study, the meeting that at one time was considered to be the most important one as it was with that group we would meet with when the tribulation began and we had to meet "underground"
2. The assemblies in my lifetime have been reduced from 8 days to 1 day.

That's gonna be a hard pill for young Witnesses to swallow. The religion organizes no social activities for young people. On the contrary, it discourages social activities that sprout up organically.
Large district conventions were the best occassion that witnesses in good conscious could use to find someone to date (but don't call it dating!).
Conventions at assembly halls won't have the same appeal. Thinking back to when I was young, I already knew half the girls at the assembly hall since they were from the same general area.

True on the dating thing, but the "in" way to meet potential mates is now thru RBC work.
For the wealthier, international conventions or volunteering for a few weeks or a month at Warwick also works.
