Walls - thanks for the updates.
LisaRose - Amen.
DD - LMAO!
this will definitely be a money saver for them. Also consider the fact that each year, there's an increase in members. My cutting off days, more days will be available for the use of a single assembly hall. They probably don't want to be building new Assemblies or renting out places (especially now that members will be directly paying for their own KH constructions). If this does happen, it will be a shocker to many. I know the reaction when the letter was read for the change in assembly days was a puzzling one. Everyone was surprised by this, even the brother reading the letter. In the end, he just said these are the changes and so we go along with it.
I'm really not sure where I should post this question. It's not a rumor. I just wonder if anyone has any thoughts on a recent magazine article. It's the 11/15/13 one, I think. A couple of articles stand out. Seven Shepherds, Eight Dukes and Obey Jehovah's Shepherd.
Specifically this:
Elders who are reading this article can draw some useful conclusions from the account we have just considered: (1) The most practical step that we can take to prepare for the coming attack of “the Assyrian” is that of strengthening our faith in God and helping our brothers to do the same. (2) When “the Assyrian” attacks, the elders must be absolutely convinced that Jehovah will deliver us. (3) At that time, the life-saving direction that we receive from Jehovah’s organization may not appear practical from a human standpoint. All of us must be ready to obey any instructions we may receive, whether these appear sound from a strategic or human standpoint or not. (4) Now is the time for any who may be putting their trust in secular education, material things, or human institutions to adjust their thinking. The elders must stand ready to help any who may now be wavering in their faith.
To me, this is very sinister and threatening. It makes me wonder what exactly they're capable of and are the higher ups planning some kind of end game. I did read somewhere something about the idea of preparing survivalist kits was slowly being brought into KHs. I don't know if that is true or not. Thoughts on this?
Hmmm, an end game..I don't know...but somehow the GB and the remnant of the 144000 will be "raptured" according to the actual JW-theology...It feels very sinister and wierd.
Survival kits seem to be true, but the reason is said being prepared for natural disasters.
Yes, I did read that. That if the survival kit thing is true, it's said to be prepared for natural disaster. But I have to ask...is it really? In light of this article, I'm not so sure. To me, that's scary. Very, very scary.
Have a new look at :
" (4) Now is the time for any who may be putting their trust in secular education, material things, or human institutions to adjust their thinking."
MAybe the organisation will be more radical in some aspects, e g education, but this phrase is an interesting statement. It could have to do with almost everything..........but I would guess that getting money to the organisation is their prime goal.
That end game or rapture could be interesting to make specualtions about, but it's almost more effective to follow the money..
As a kid, as a teenager, there was excitement about a district convention. Sometimes it was at a ballpark. Normally we didn't go there so it was cool to be able to walk around, even run the bases. Sometimes it was out of town and that was exciting. We got to visit another city, see things at night. Sometimes in a hotel, sometimes in our camper. Staying in a hotel usually meant a pool which was exciting. Getting to hang out with friends from my hall and others. And in my later teens, it was the place to scout for girls. You knew all the girls in the circuit. This was the chance for new hotties.
Even the convention itself was somewhat exciting. I always looked forward to the dramas because they were exciting compared to the talks. And there's also something very relaxing about a hushed auditorium. The sound of the speaker, the way the voice is broadcast from speakers, the faint echoes. The occasional light rustle of people turning bible pages. Very relaxing. Some nice naps were had. Just thinking about it makes me sleepy. There was also the suspense of what the new books would be. And whether any new light would be coming.
District conventions did have a special feel compared to circuit assemblies. I can't see how they will capture that same feel. It will feel like a circuit assembly and a one-day one at that. Which weren't even as special as 2-day circuit assemblies because nobody stayed in a hotel and that aspect was gone.
May be a cost saver, but I think the end result is going to further depress the members who are still in.
Another cost saver, true, but what is the underlying reason. Because they are bleeding out with lawsuits and lack of donations or because they are doing well and want to get even richer?
District conventions were always the place for new light and carefully scripted. With a bunch of one-days, it's going to be a lot harder for quality control. I could see taped events, but that's always boring. Reminds me of concerts where you sit so far back, you can't see the band, but you're watching them on the monitor thinking, I couldve bought a DVD for this.
Maybe they'll get holograms and project recordings of governing body members giving the talks:
Another cost saver, true, but what is the underlying reason.
A cynic would say WT leadership would prefer that witnesses donate money they would otherwise spend on a hotel and travel expenses. I'm not sure I'm willing to go that far, though.
At the end of the day, witnesses would likely donate the same amount regardless of whether the convention is one, two or three days long. If the WT is hurting for cash, as I suspect it is, it would seem like reducing the number of days and confining them to assembly halls would be one of the first changes you'd make.
