I believe it is not unreasonable to draw a comparison between the JW cult and Islam. The conduct and opinions of inactive JWs do not provide evidence for the actual beliefs and practices of mainstream JWs.

If JW's were ever actually able to set up their own little "theocracy" it wouldn't be long before they were acting just like devout muslims, complete with stonings and all other sorts of medieval fun and games.
I don't have the quote handy, but they've published that the only reason they don't practice stoning of "sinners" is because it's illegal in most countries.
I've personally had an elder--and someone that was a former "friend" (or so I used to believe)--tell me that I should have been stoned to death for something I did.
I reminded him that we are not under the Mosaic Law any longer, but under the law of the Christ. It was truly a weird experience to be threatened like that. The only thing that kept me from responding differently was that I was trying to reconcile the broken relationship with my children. So far it hasn't worked.
